I recently put in a set of foam baffles (XTC) to protect my 5.25's in the door from water, Krown & other nasties. I have noticed what is best described as a residual distortion post bass line. The car is a 2001 Prelude. Anyone who has worked on these cars knows it is a tight squeeze in there.

Could it be that the driver is not getting enough air? The sound wasn't there before, doesn't sound too loud but is enough for me to notice.

The set-up is Diamond Hex 500-s, power by CH 1&2 off a JL 450/4, gains set very moderately (a tad over 3 o'clock), HP'd at 75 hz 12db slope.

Resin them. Trust me, if they are the foam ones, just saturate them with resin. Let dry over night, reinstall. Problem solved.

 

I actually have enough resin sitting around. I may just try that. It will also probably extend the life of them as well. , they will probably outlast the car.

Could venting them help?

You can still vent them after if you wish to help tune them a little, but them foam baffles need a good resin job to stop the resonance. Good luck! Trust me, I've used them for a long time.

Can't hurt to try the resin thing and if it doesn't help make a cut out on the bottom side of them, could be just the speaker doesn't like being enclosed.

 

You guys know that resin will dissolve certain types of foam right?

 

never happened to me .... maybe just not the type of foam they use for audio baffles???? I always toss in a little extra hardener so it cures quicker (don't over kill) saturate them quickly, and let dry over night...

 

Thanks guys! I greatly appreciate the feedback!! They are drying right now. I will let you all know if there is an improvement. They are a decent sounding mid, but this was killing everything despite being kinda benign. My sub hits very fast (punk rock, metal listener) and this noise would always appear right after making it very audible once noticed.

On to my next question, will acoustic cotton (the stuff seen in sub boxes, don't know the industry term) help, hinder or do **** all for mid response? Unsure the specs of the passive x-over so can't be 100% on what frequencies are going through the driver. I have some of this stuff sitting around as well. I may just bring it back to my local shop who donated it to me to experiment with.
