RIP: Xenon 12d4 (What now?!)

I finally seized the last coil in my Xenon 12d4, and after a month of searching, I'm fairly sure there isn't another new one in existence in North America.

So my question is, what do I replace it with?

I was running it in a 3'-cube sealed box (rec. for musical, was nice) off of half of a xenon 100.4 (I know it's 500 RMS, but those 200 pushed it very nicely so I used the other 2 for my high end.)

What would someone recommend for a good SQ sub run off 200 watts that would do the same job in the SPL department?

With the power you have available, a good basic sub is all that you require. If you need to change the tonal output of it, start playing with the box. Bass response is all about the box. A good basic sub is the Pioneer Premiere TSW1207D2 for your application. On sale for $100 right now.

Yep, 3.0 cu-Feet for a musical sealed box for a Xenon 12d4 (1.0 cu-Ft for SPL) according to the spec sheet.
It had an extremely nice response curve (especially on the low end), and was pretty darned loud for a single sub.

I'd like to stick with a single sub that can perform like that Xenon did on that amp, without losing any performance if possible...

I'd rather an upgrade than a downgrade.

if you blew up a 500watt RMS sub with 200 watts (40%)
there's a problem (or three)

either the box is too big (which I believe is the case) and you had it flopping around in there well beyond it's physical capabilities.

..or, you were clipping the amp so badly that I'm actually surprised you thought it sounded good?

in either case, pretty much any sub will do that the same way.

Subwoofer Specifications
Subwoofer Size 12"
Voice Coil(s) Dual (2 voice coils)
Impedance (per voice coil) 4 ohms
Peak Power Handling 900 watts
RMS Power Handling 500 watts
Woofer Surround Large Roll Butyl Rubber
Sealed Box Volume 1.0 - 2.0 cubic feet
Ported Box Volume 2.75 - 3.20 cubic feet
Sensitivity 83 dB
Frequency Response N/A
Top Mount Depth 6-7/8"
Cutout Diameter 11-1/4"

....size does matter.

Burnt one coil, seized the other?
First coil = no resistance
Second coil = no longer makes the sub extend properly + makes the amp very unhappy

Don't think the box is too big...

www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?31f3669163.jpg (Xenon_Sub_Manual excerpt)

I've got the amp at about 3/4 gain, and always play with the remote Low Pass Level control so that I never clip or push past what the sub likes...

HOWEVER, when I blew the first coil, I was interested in just how loud I could play 20 Dollar by MIA, and I'm pretty sure it was actually my overzealousness that led to the deck clipping when I was pushing a retardedly low frequency at the system's max output.

Since then, I'd been running the same power through the remaining coil (what did I have to lose, it was already half blown <shrug>) and it sounded fine, but after constant high level play from Jasper to Saskatoon (10+ hours?) I think the heat + Trent Reznor's Jacob's Ladder *(ZZZZZZzzzt!) sample finally got to the second coil...

Pretty sure it was end user abuse + stupidity that killed the sub...

I haven't just shot myself in the SQ forum foot have I?

My initial install had the 100.4 bridged for 200 watts to each coil (493 watts on the birth sheet), but when I threw in focals for the high end, I decided to check out how the sub sounded on just half the amp, and with that box, I honestly didn't notice a tremendous difference in response...

Has my Paradigm+Yamaha home setup left me completely tone-deaf?
Am I stupid for following designers specifications on building an SQ box?

poor poor sub there are a few kicking around from the xenon series in north america thats for sure, just got to look really really hard, i love the xenon series and have many of them, 2 200.4, 1 1200.1, 2 600.1, and i refuse to let any of them go they are amazing amps and boatloads of power, if they broke i would pay to fix them for sure. but just keep looking at classefied sites and stuff they are there

Red face

Well, I'm going to keep looking for another Xenon.
I'm in love with the amp, and I've replaced the sub with a JL 12w3v2 in a ported box. It has a little more of a tight thump in the frequencies the box is tuned to, but the xenon had more low end range and hit just as hard even though I was technically underpowering it.

And My super bad on the box size, I didn't build it musical (3.0), I ended up going with about a 1.4 cubed built using the golden rule calculations... (it was a long time ago <shrug> and I guess that's all I could fit in my trunk)

Sorry to any SQ junkies that I offended with my off-kilter underpowering and box sizes and such..
