^ Yes defro I know what fresh vinyl sounds like on at least a decent system... there is a good collection of vinyl at home ranging from big band to blues to heavy metal and a variaty of tables...

the old man is fairly into it... so is my roommate who manages to find current albumbs on vinyl right now...

Kind of funny listening to a record recorded in 2005...

Vinyl was nice and still has it's place. The biggest problem is noise, which drives me nuts, I can't get past it now that I'm used to digital media. All the other inconveniences just add to the reasons why it's a dead or dying medium. I will agree that it does sound different than digital and can sound very good when you get a good copy and play it on a good system. Unfortunately that's where the problem lies...getting a good copy. I grew up on vinyl and still have hundreds of records, but I never listen to them anymore...maybe I'll give them another try.

I personally think the little noises that apear in listening to vinyl add so much charcater to the peice your listening to.

I love the sound of that little tiny hiss and the occasional little crackle you hear once in a while...somehow it makes the listening experience better for me.

I think as a soceity we are "brainwashed",as it were, to beleiving that if something is not perfect and crystal clear, its not worth dealing with.I find this not only with music, but in all realms of life..ie:cars..it used to be as long as your car was operational and served the purpose,it was good.Anymore,if its not less the 4 yrs old,if it doesnt have all the bells and whistles(ac,pw,etc)its not worth even looking at.

Movies are another area that is affected. The other night I watched the original King Kong on TV..Chessy?By todays standards, yes. But considering the technology that was available at that time, its a wonderful movie to watch. And even the different media's available to us has been effected.I've got a collection of Beta movies here that I would standup against nearly any DVD for picture quality. But sorry, its dated and has no place in our world anymore.Did anyone know that the beta tape gave better sound and picture reproduction than the VHS?So why did it disappear so fast?Simply becasue the world around us has stated that its dated and has no place.

And I think music is a huge area where this applies. The electronics industry has grwon at such a fast rate since the advent of the digital recording, that people feel they need to keep up with it.Meanwhile, sitting in someones attic is a collection of unbeleivably great music that isnt printed anymore...and why is this?

Because society dictates that if its not 100% crystal clear, its not worth looking at...

Thats just my 2 peso's..Thanks for letting me rant.

Yeah so what about that hiss and the odd pop or crackle? I imagine making sure the record is perfectly clean can avoid the pops/crackles but what about hiss? Analogue so I'm guessing no matter how many tens of thousands all your turntable stuff costs, you won't get rid of the hiss. Maybe that's considered 'tolerable' in vinyl listening.

So as far as all that goes, what kind of romantic embrace does analogue cassette tape hold? It's analogue, it has hiss. I don't see people running around gathering all the cassettes they can find

Hey, to each his own. I like clarity, convenience, availability, inexpensiveness(software and equipment), and durability. As for tapes, same thing, I used to like them until I got used to my cd's. There's nothing greater than the ability to skip a track in .2 seconds or burn a compilation on a $0.30 disc, that's why digital is here and analog is not. Digital media allows the masses to have exceptional fidelity at affordable prices. Anyone can have 95% of the sound quality that the best equipment can offer for a few hundred dollars. That's not as easy to do with analog. I have yet to meet a "normal" person who does not believe that cd's sound better than tapes or records. Audio nerds like us always look for things that the average person could care less about,...does it mean that we hear better? I don't think so, I think it just means we look for crap to justify our obsession with audio. Similar to the wine expert, are his taste buds better than mine? I don't think so. In fact most of the stuff they think is good, I think taste horrible. I guess I'm just not refined enough.

Convenience and the pursuit of the ultimate SQ don't belong in the same sentence LOL.

Slap it in, turn it up and party on.
Or carefully install it, tear it out, try again, over and over til you find the best way (often the very first attempt can't be improved upon).

As I grow older, with failing eyes and ears, I find a greater appreciation for what I once had, that I didn't know how to use while I had it.

I read somewhere that the best musicians are satisfied with the worst sound systems, because they hear what it's meant to sound like, regardless of what they are listening to.

My few minutes of kneeling at my table, setting it up, marveling in the engineering, anticpating the thrill, and then finally enjoying the music, adds something .... maybe it is only in my head, but that's all I have....
It's even better when another is blown away by the clarity, definition, and realism, coming from such a "stone age" device.

The effort you put into anything, is proportional to what you'll get back, whether it's trying to squeeze a few extra hp from a Holley fed 340 (carbeurators...another stoneage device), or gain a point in IASCA.

I've offered this thread only to share a bit of the nirvana I'll get with y'all...

And I'm still PO'd at losing the Waters LP deal....but I'll get over it...It's the end of the trilogy....Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Amused to Death.

For those of you into Floyd...Grab the CD, and give it a listen or three...time well wasted.

I found a 24 carat "20 bit" CD of the albumn going for big bux....anyone know if these things actually sound better than a regular CD?
