Roger Waters on vinyl
Santa came early today...two albumns arrived, one from Germany, one from the States.
I got to play the first four sides of the 1986 Floyd concert recorded in Ottawa. 10:00pm curfew, and I had to shut it down for the night.
Initially I was a bit disappointed, as it appears to be a bootleg copy, recorded from the stands.
There's a lot of screaming from the fans in close proximity (I was probably one of them!), that detracts a bit from the musicians, but after the first side, I was totally enthralled.
There is almost no seperation in the recording, but nonetheless I can't wait to get to the final two sides, and I will wait until there's no-one home.
By the fourth side, I was Jonesin' to crank it to the limits of my system...Grampa in the house tho LOL
This was Floyd's first world tour, since Waters left the band, and the performance was nothing like the later polished, and perfected live releases.
The band added twists, bends, and warps to the music, in a much more psychedelic fashion, and it was cool to hear it again after 29 1/2 years.
A few of the songs (Echoes, A New Machine, Terminal Frost), have never been released in live form.
Time has Gilmour adding variations that are astounding to hear.
All in all, this was not an SQ dream album, but the screams , hoots and hollers at the incredible light show just add to the ambiance of what it was really like to be there.
Perhaps the fact that I was there, allows me to hear through the noise, and remember, but I'm still impressed.
Oh yeah...I won a copies of Amused to Death, and Hell Freezes Over today, so Christmas is going to be a good 12 days yet! Gonna be interesting to compare those to the CD versions....I'll let you know when they arrive.
Happy Holidays!
