Rears are fine for stereo systems in a car. It just depends on how you use them. I already mentioned how to wire them in another post, so I won't go into it here.

One place I am a fan of 2 sets of components is in a regular cab pickup, all of the speakers are relatively the same distance from your ears and the rears aren't so far away that I can tell where they are

There are pros and cons of each and here is how I see it

Front only comps:
PROS: Opportunity to have a front stage, basically the music seems to come from in front of you.
CONS:Less loud, frequency response issues. To have a decent stage you need great install\aiming and\or processing such as EQ and time alignment.

Front and rear comps:
PROS: Louder, frequency response is smoothed out, potential for greater low end and midbase impact a lot less work.
CONS: No hope for a soundstage as sounds will seem to be coming from a bit everywhere.

The above is for stereo only of course. The list changes for front+rears when surround sound processing is envolved.

I think if one isn’t ready to spend lots of time and money getting the install and tuning right, then just surrounding yourself with speakers will sound best at the expense of “the stage placement”.

Amp running them will be a kenwood excelon Xr-4S 120 watts per speaker. I listen to pretty much everything. Rock, metal, jazz, dance, top 40. Car is a civic Hatch. The head unit is a kenwood excelon.
It's your car...put the speakers where ever you want.

^I love this type of useless advice. hehehe

It's not about WANTING...it's about what's the most logical\best approach. Can't you see that?

Let's try this again......

Install the rear speakers. Drive around and if you like the sound, keep them in. If not, remove the rear speakers and sell them off in the classified section.

If you plan on competing, do not install rear fill (for reasons already stated).

Let you ears be your guide.
