Seriously lacking mid bass ??
Seriously lacking mid bass ??
Hi everyone,
Well I just picked up and installed a set of Hertz hi Energy 6.5 comps in my Audi TT. I was planning on going with Dayton reference , but the price I got these for made them impossible to pass up, especially with all the good things I've heard about them.
Over all impresions , out of the box, very classy looking drivers. I would love to have these sitting without a grill. Well made for sure , very large magnet on the 6.5 , and the tweet looks clean with its cotton dome .
Now for the install, ...The door pannel on the TT comes off with ease. I've desided, for now, to mount the mids in the door in the stock locations. In taking off the door pannel , I noticed that the stock mids were actually mounted on the inside of the door pannel, totaly surrounded by foam .
There is a lot of room in the door its self, but no metal to actually mount the new driver to. SO I mounted them in the stock locations against the inside of the pannel and re attached the door.
I have the tweeters on a long lead and have been listening to them in different locations, in the A pillar area, on the dash, and down in the stock area. So far up on the dash near the Apillar is the best for imaging and depth in the sound. They sound great, not harsh at all, just "right".. very accurate.
As far as the mid bass, in the car, they need a bit of work .The midrange sounds nice , but is really lacking any type of punch at the moment. I'm sure thats because of instal issues that need to be resolved.
I'm wondering if this could be because of the strange way Audi has set up speaker mounting in the door. Kind of 'hanging" off the inside of the door pannel. It does make a good seal between the driver and the cabin though,
Because of this set up I am thinking I could build a small enclosure on to the back the panel , and re inforce the area of the panel with fiberglass or an MDF pannel. Even then though, the enclosure and the driver would be 'hanging' there, in to the door.
Well if you've been patient to read through this whole thing, I'd love some feedback about ways I could beef up the mid bass in this kind of door panel set up.
By the way, these drivers are amazing, I set them up in a test enclosure in my house and they sound just about as good as the Scans in my Totem Hawks. Very musical , very nice to listen to . Hertz has a real winner here
.
Hopefully I can get the mids to perform like this in the car

The lack of midbass is definately due to install issues, because usually everyone that has those speakers raves about the amount of midbass they do have.
That car is a tougher install.....you could use some Cascade D7 Deflex pads to help with the overall sound improvement. They will improve the midbass, plus overall sound.
It has been quite some time since I did speakers in a TT and cant quite remember what we did with the install.
I'm glad to hear you like the speakers....that is the reaction we have been getting Nationwide on them....
I'll ask around to see if there is anything that I can come up with the help with your install.

you need to make some sort of enclosure for them... i used pvc pipe about 3-4 inches long, made an mdf baffle for the front, attach with contact cement (the bafffle to the pipe) and another 1/4 inch piece of wood to seal up the back... just make something not completely permanent, so you can change if you come up with something better... I have 5.25's and the midbass coming out of them, is to say the least decent.. best of luck
great , thanks guys
I was thinking of using a pair of plastic tuperware style bowls , there is quite a bit of room in those doors, and enforcing the area of the panel around the speaker with fiberglass.
But we'll see, this long weekend will see me tearing off the panels and starting to try and work on this.
I'll take some pictures as I go and post my progress.
I went through the thread with the Focals, I figured my door set up was a little different ( drivers mounted to the inside of the panel instead of the door itself) so required a differnent aproach.
Thanks for all the help so far

the easiest way to increase the mid bass with that set up would be to use a speaker baffle we carry a foam type and we found it doesent add any coloration to the music. and because its foam and lets say your door is a bit odd shaped then it'll fit without a lot of effort. usually thoes cars have pretty good insulation on the doors as well but if you want to weight load them some more it wouldent hurt but keep the factory stuff in there as well or your car will sound like a tin can !
Well I did a total re install on the doors and it sounds so much fuller now. I'm very happy with the sound I'm getting now. I brought the mids out from the stock location and mounted them on baffles on the door. I took pics along the way if anyone wants to see. I all so built some custom pods on the Apilar for the tweeters as well.
The tweeter placement really raised the sound stage a lot. Its now right about eye level. If I had to nit pick it trails a bit towords the driver side. I have set the balance on the source +1 to the passanger side to compensate a bit . Does anyone else use this as a solution to center up the image. I've read about reversing the poliarity on one side, but I'm not sure how to go about it?
I'll put up the pictures tonight I think they turned out pretty nice
thanks for the help everyone
