single olympus 15" for general sq?

Hey all

I have found a deal on a great high end 15" sub that I am thinking about picking up but I am a little concerned. I have never owned a 15" sub and I the only 15" subs I Have seen here in a wall behind the seat of a honda crx. The sud is a hifoncis OLM2415 I know its a pig of a sub for sq. I am not looking to do anything in comps at all as the only comps around here are for spl only I am just wondering in general how a 15" single sub sounds.

I call tech support and the guy I talked to said that it will work if its set up right but I am trying to get some other ideas from sources that aren't making them.

If I do decide to get it I am going to run 2400 watts rms to it with a pair of 6 1/2 comps with an 8" mid bass and some simple coax speakers in the back also 6 1/2.

Any thoughts on this idea please let me know I am looking for info both good and bad.

Thanks

Unless you have a properly designed 15" ported box, I'd recommend going with a sealed box. What speakers do you have?

I am going with the factory designed box and port which is designed for sq. The factory tech told me flat out that a sealed box is a bad idea for this sub. The fronts are going to be higher end hifonics 6 1/2" comps with 8" square mid base

Oh, alright, the sub is designed for ported enclosures, I say go for it, if the price is great, why not? There's one thing I DON't recommend though, that's the square mid bass. Why go for a square shaped speaker? Circle speakers produce a better sound quality. How much is your budget for the mid bass?

The only reason I was going with a square is because I wanted to keep all my gear Hifoncis and they have a new 8" square speaker that will fill in the mids very well. I can go with a round shape if ts going to be better but the placemenet of this is going to be a little different.

My truck comes stock with an 8" sub in the center console and I wanted to make use of that space the best that I can so I though the square might be better for a little more kick thats all.

Oh, true. Uhm, to be honest, you're not going to get much surface area (kick) from a square midbass. I understand you wanna keep it all Hifonics, but I suggest you should look at other companies, because there ALWAYS are better speakers.

Midbase should be stereo... seems like you are saying you want to put one midbase in the stock dash opening. I can't see this being a good idea...unless I miss read.

i can get 6 1/2 mid bass from hifonics the only reason I was thinking of the square is because they are 8 ohm and if I bridge them I can get 2 of them in the same space and that way everything looks totally stock which is what I am going for and the frequence response from the 8" square will full in rather well.

thats what I was thinking anyway.

Midbass frequencies are high enough that they are perceived in stereo....running mono in the center console will mess up your front stage imaging.

Better to have one in each door if you can fit them in with the comps somehow....

yeah I can understand that I was not sure if it would work or not. With that in mind and the fact that I don't want to redo my doors would I be better off with just a set of 6 1/2's in each door? I would go three way but hifonics or any of their sister companies make a set that I know of but I will look around. If anyone finds a something before I do please let me know.
