Speaker Comparison
So I don't what to do about speakers... Tried Morel Hyrbid Ovation 5 1/4's and didn't like them, vocals were way too muffled, used to have Eclipse SC series 5 1/4 components and absolutely loved them... Had Kaption MPT 5 1/4 components in BMW and those are prob best sounding speakers I have ever owned. Now I have Hertz HSK-165 6.5 components and don't like them, can't tune them right and sound harsh and cold compared to both Eclipse and Kaption components. Should I trade them for Kaptions or something else? Do I need to go back to a 5 1/4" component to get the right sound? What speakers do all of you suggest?

Every car has different acoustical charactweristics as well. Just changing equipment is often not the solution. Are your doors sound deadened?. How are your tweeters setup?. What kind of EQ does your head unit/processor have?

Go with what you know...unless you're looking to experiment or try new components. The old saying,"don't fix it if it ain't broke!" applies. By the way, you may be able to get some really good deals on eclipse comps from mr2nr as he has some specials on now.

Thanks for the input, I've got these now, you're all right... probably should of just got Kaptions, but since I have these Hertz, they should be a great speaker... cause no way I can return them now, already had them for month and a half. Running active with tweets in A-pillars, which are much closer and more direct line to me than mids, so even with tuning they sound a little cold, harsh and won't blend. Any solutions? Also getting reverberations from mids on door panels at mid volumes?

Move tweeters around until you find the best spot and change the angles...have them firing at each other perhaps or off the windshield etc.... You can try to eq the high frequencies to reduce harshness, and sound deaden your doors to reduce the vibrations.

Ya I have them aimed at each other in A-pillars which I found to be best angle, and I will work on reducing vibrations, but damn these speakers are harsh on my ears, and unclear vocals, and the same has been true all both these and Morels tweeters in pillars, and same was true for doors. My ears actually hurt from listening to them for even 5 minutes. Are Hertz supposed to sound cold or warm & neutral? I'm looking for a warm and powerful sound, but need highs and vocals to be nice and silky smooth... Should I stick with these or what component set would you guys suggest? I'm definately giving up on higher tweets in my vehicle, no way will I be messing with them up high anymore... they're definately going down low, just need to know what speakers would give me that type of sound, and with tweets low by mid aimed up?

And they're running active, should I keep them this way when I move them down low or bi-amp off the passives? Oh and I have tried every possible imaginable tweak. Phase to each speaker, 6db all the way to 24db slopes, and 2.5khz all the way up to 4khz crossovers, and nothing makes too much difference. The time alignment can manage to move stage across dash, but can't blend the components in a way that makes them sound smooth and listenable for any extended period. Basically can I get these to sound warm & buttery or should I try and return them so I can get Kaption MPT's again?

I can see how you must be frustrated. Morel and Hertz are usually considered very natural and listenable speakers. I have the MLK 165 Hertz and they are anything but harsh, and have exceptional clarity. The HSK 165 are said to be very similar in sound. The Morels usually get very good reviews on all fronts. You should be able to get the sound you are looking for from either of these sets. It would be a shame to spend more money before you figure out what's happening. Running active is the way to go, and tweeters in the " A " pillars should give you an excellent soundstage. I have mine almost on axis in the pillars. Good luck, I hope you can get this sorted out.
