sq help

so i was finally getting around to doing the front stage in my audi, and when the door panels were popped off, surprise, 4" speakers in the doors and no room for larger without some serious custom work. Now im not about to cut and hack away at the doors to this thing, but i def want better sound than the symphony system has to offer. Kick panels have NO room behind them waht so ever, so if i was to build custom kicks.... it would make baby jesus cry with how far they would be stickin out.

Are there any ideas out there other than getting a 4" component system hooked up?

Even though you dont have much room in your kicks, I would suggest using them. You could probably make a set with out taking up much room.

What year is your car and do you have photo's of the kick area?

I've done it both in an A4 and A6............. it's a pain in the azz........ I moved all the electronics/wires. I think I still have the relay bracket thingy from the A4 in the junk pile. If you don't have some *****, it's not a job for you !!! I don't mean that in a nasty way, but it's not something for the faint of heart in case you screw it up !!

See if off one of the forums you can get yourself a second set of used door panels and hack them up to fit what you need for a midbass driver. Then a 3" dome or similar and tweet in the a-pillars firing across the windshield (tweeter) and play with the setup of the 3" to suit.

its an 01 a4 and i could get a photo of the kicks if i dont end up working this saturday.

And yea, every shop i have talked to lately has said that this car is a peice of to work on.... Kicks would probs be the least costly of them all, but again, no room unless they make shallow midbass drivers somewhere?

Secondary door panels would work, and ill consider that if i cant do anything else about it!

There is only one stage.

if kicks or modding the doors aren't options, there are some 4's that play fairly low (considering)....not trying to pawn them off, but I have a pair of Seas Excel 4's that play surprisingly low, throw some relatively low playing tweets up on the dash or in the sails and cross your sub at 100 Hz and you'd be fine.

4" are ok but never have I heard a set that when turned up volume wise don't fall apart in the lower vocals and such. Hard to get them to be more then a mid.............. although some sets do better then others.

DLS did an A4 of your vintage that was at CES one year.............. check out the DLS.se web page as there's an installs section I think. Some radical ideas, not all of which I agreed with. How about a 3" dome mid and Tweet in the A-pillar........... 5.25" midbass in the kicks........... ?

Ok, going on memory here............... regarding the gutting of the kicks......... fom a long time ago..................hoping not to get the A4 and A6 confused (!!!)............. but there's a relay/junction panel that can be disassembled..............and all the relays and junctions moved forward and stuffed under the carpet. Worth while taking a picture of the setup so if you ever want to go back !!! But basically it's a plastic grid that's attached to the kick panel wall where all the junk snaps into. Time consuming but very do-able. I don't think I extended any of the leads either. Oh, and some times the *Stuff* can be stuff UP under the dash area. just be careful not to force anything. On the opposite side, there's a electronics box (or two?......which ones I can't remember) and it can be pulled down and moved forward to be stuffed under the carpet. I think I gutted under the carpet......... removed some of the backing foam...........in the A4......... or maybe it was the A6.

3-way front stage is very do-able if you are doing an active setup. Keeping at least two of the three components close works nicely............ especially if it's the mid and tweet up on the dash somehow!!! Is it perfect.......... well of course not. Then again, a car is a sh*t can of an audio environment to start with !!!!

wellllllllll after doing dome dicking around and searching.... and kicks means relocation of a ton of wiring for sure, and i dont really want to do that. i might just end up picking a shop to cut up the doors and do something like one of these here... might cost a bit more than i wanted to spend.... but hey, get it done.... ill eventually forget the money is gone, but have a better sounding setup.....

anybody here in the ontario area very confident in their fiberglassing, and ability to make some upgrades look bone stock in an audi, intrested in doing a little jobby and making some cash?

and im thinking of going 2 way not 3 way with the tweeters in the door aswell in the stock location. dont wanna go super extreme in this. I COULD, but would rather not at the moment.

First picture is easier. That DLS car ........... I listened to it if that's the one I'm remembering ............ closed my eyes as those tweet pods were REALLY distracting.............. sounded decent though. But that entire door was re-covered......... which is a fun task at best !!

Remember, once you cut those doors, there's no going back !! I'd almost recommend pulling off the doors and make some small boxes to test if you like that location........... although it sounds like you don't have any other options really. So, may as well go for it. It's a decent size job actually as I think to do it right you would need to build up some reinforcement so that the speaker is SOLID to the door. I think would be best to build the enclosure (or mounting rings) fixed to the door, cut the door skin to fit the speaker buildout and then build *TRIM* to fix to the door skin that covers over the new gapping hole !!!
