My DLS SP12 has really impressed me with it's detail and how low it plays. it has also impressed many other SQ people around here including die hard W7 fans. even in 1.2 cubes sealed, when the sub is "not supposed" to play sealed at all.

My two Focal Utopia 27WX's sound great...really tight and hit surprising low. I have them sealed in a box.

There was a Rockford 15" (circa 1990) playing in a demo that I could not see, I mistook the demo for a drum kit in the next room (ported)

Also there was the ADS 12" (also circa 1990) that had speed, power, and pitch of real bass instruments too (sealed)

There are a crapload of really poostain subs passed off the cat's pajama's these days. More so thanks to many a forum and the hot item of the week. I agree with Dave, the number of subs designed for sealed boxes has increased and of these ones, there are more available that actually are a well designed and engineered sub as well. Has there been major advances in design.... argueable, sometimes a person good with numbers and calculations is just as good as a computer optimized design. The days of old had some great subs, my favorite cheap sub was the Pioneer TSW251C, the original poly cone sub. A huge improvement over the previous paper cone design. Even the 8" version was a performer in those days. (1991 ish)

^ I had a buddy with an Iroc-Z that had two of those 10s playing into the rear well like most any other F body of that era and a pair of 8s in a box on top of the shelf above the gas tank. Those subs were very popular around my home town. I can't really say how well they sounded since most of them were in a crappy installation

To paraphrase Defro and mostly agree…
There are many more very good sounding woofers now compared to 15 or even 10 years ago. There are generally more really bad sounding woofers these days compared to the 90's. The SQ woofer genre of today are better overall than the SQ woofers of yesteryear… but I am not sure some of the very best paper cones of yesteryear have been truly bettered in the area of accuracy and realism but modern SQ woofers have surpassed the quality of construction, frequency extension, and SPL of earlier designs

CCA has the “what SQ woofer is best” thread 3 times a year and the list of recommended woofers include, but are not limited to; ID, Brahma, Aliante, W7, W6, Dynaudio, Eclipse, Morel, Focal, AVI, Alpine X, MBQ, ARC, etc. I can not recall a time with a larger selection of high quality SQ woofers was available, and most pound pretty hard too!
