I have heard a number of vehicles with subs in the back that nailed the upfront illusion.. It takes work.. Best one i have heard is steve cornels.. Not just because the bass sounds like its up front, but because the low end sounds so good.. I like AP sub systems .
Both have advantages and disadvantages..
Up front sub is the way to go for serious SQ set up's
And I'm talking real subs not an attempt at a 6 or 5 inch driver. You CAN NOT get enough output from these drivers unless your using a bunch of them.
Marc Turners car used 2 12's in the rear, and one in the dash. We played with many set ups like no rear sub, or a very low (20-30 x over low pass) crossover on the rears. This was only used to get that very low lows on track 5 of the iasca CD. It came down to the fact that most of the judges never heard those notes in that song before so why waste time on it.. 99% of the time we only used the front sub, unless it a very very quiet judging floor, or it just gets lost in the noise from around the car.
My Impala has a 10 in the dash. It's crossed over at 130hz 24db/oct . I also have rear 15's but, they have no power to them (no wire runs connected) In my opionion it works very well.
What does an up front sub get you:
1: Up front bass. Ya ya non directional ya ya...... The sound may be non directional, but the rear of your seats moving, and the resonance from all the rear panels makes it obvious that its coming from behind.
2: Higher crossover point gives you the ability to have more mid-bass.(since the sub plays it)
3: Smoother crossover transition, in the mid-bass, bass x-over point. Now sounds are not moving from front to back.
The rane delays outrigth........suck.

The only reason the 15's were installed was so that the local rep (my sponsor) when they take the car for demo's can blow the crap out of kids when they want to hear the "booty bass"
In the car you can not see any speakers at all. So know one will see them. My designed changed and I decided not to show any drivers.I don't want any pre-conceived idea's going on. The cars interior looks fcatory. People can't beleive when I say thiers a ten in the dash, because it can't be seen.

i agree with impala builder that to get bass up front you need woofers up front, but great bass can be achieved with a small driver, 5" of 6" and a large woofer 10" and bigger is not necessary if the small speaker is applied properly to get optimum output
I agree with Jamie; upfront sub is the way to go for the ultimate upfront subbass experience.
But, I also agree with Brandon, when he said that the gains on your subwoofer amps need to be adjusted so that they're not overpowering your front-stage speakers. I have subs in the trunk with the gains turned down just enough so that the bass is coming from up-front. The high quality 3 way speaker system up-front helps in achieving this goal.
