I don't think any judge would ever be truly non-brand biased. Judges are people in the car audio industry. They have an interest in it. It's their livelihood. They have opinions on brands. It would be absurd to say they did not. To not be subjective on the brand of gear a judge sees in a car IMO is not possible. One reason why I disagree in general with the same judges doing installation first and then SQ. The judge should try to maintain a free as possible state of mind from bias when doing the SQ judging and that is much easier accomplished by doing the listening first and the looking second. Whether you are using the most expensive uber-gear out there or the cheapest, an opinion will form, like it or not. Then comes expectations. The expectation will be on the pricey gear to sound incredible and will either be judged harder or the judge will be taken by the high-end gear and assume what he's hearing sounds correct. On the other hand, less desirable gear will assume to have a sound that is less than ideal and if it does indeed sound good, it will be that much more impressive. I dunno, I just see it being really hard to be objective when you know what you are listening to.

That is one of the things like about MECA. The equipment verification portion is actually a safety inspection (under hood fusing, good battery connection, amps securely mounted). In a multiple judge event 2 of the 3 judges don’t necessarily know the equipment they are listening to. The MECA format is very purist, it is all about SQ with no points for a window sticker, or for the system symmetry. That is one of the reasons our SQ program has grown every year, we now have almost as many SQL competitors as SPL in many events.
