Is there a high bang for buck head unit?
 

Like something with good SQ that incorporates active crossovers with adjustable slope, baffle step compensation, tweeter/mid phase adjustment, sub integration.

Preferably something without an amplifier.

Not too many in the bang for buck category without an amp. What's your budget? Bang for the buck to me means something with a lot of good features compared to the average for that price range. Kenwood KDC-MP745U comes to mind...220.00 at crutchfiled canada, probably cheaper at one of our vendors, has 24 bit dac, usb input, aux input, ipod direct digital input, 3 band parametric eq, time alignment, up to 24 db/oct x overs, 3 sets of pre outs, internal amp shut off (so technically you have your ampless deck)...and more. That's a lot of bang for the buck! check it out...by the way I'm an Alpine guy, but I think this deck is pretty nice for the price.

alpine 102 is around 160 bucks its a really nice head unit for the price

"Baffle step compensation" is an increase in output for a given wavelength of sound for a range of frequencies (particularly higher frequencies) as speakers baffle increases. This is something that is not directly dealt with by HU that I have ever seen, at least directly that is. If you purchase an HU with 3-way active capabilities you will have the option to adjust T/A and +/- dB for each speaker in the setup. Now this is not "Baffle step compensation" per say, but it will allow you to control each driver independently based on it's surroundings. Since most mid-bass drivers will be in doors and if done properly most mids and tweeters in kick panels, each speaker will have different surroundings to deal with, such as reflections etc....This will greatly help you control how each speaker behaves and in turn create a better sound stage without any one driver being overly bright. Hope this helped expalin things a bit. As far as phase for mid/tweet is concerned, you will not find much in this also, as this is easily controled bu switching the +/- on one side of your cars speakers. Oddly enough most HU's these days have a phase adjustment for the sub, as do most amps. The advice already handed out to purchase a Premier 99PRS is a good one as this has a 31 band EQ, 4-way active, T/A, etc.......As feature filled as you will find. That being said, $1500 CAD is not cheap. If you look around a bit and are lucky enough to come across the 800PRS or the Eclipse 7200 MK II, I would snatch those up in a heart beat, not quite the feature set of the 99PRS but great quality decks nevertheless. Obviously, the "bang for the buck" is relative. OP, i think you need to give a budget range, or you're gonna get every decent deck made in all price ranges...which really won't help you narrow down a candidate.

I totally agree that giving a budget would have helped but I didn't know what a good budget would be.. i'm not buying it just yet anyways so i don't want to say "keep it under 200" and then be restricted by that. At the same time i said bang for buck because I don't need the "best"... just "great"

I agree with the Pioneer 800PRS or the Eclipse 7200 MK II if you need the active abilities and the full boar EQ if you can live without that though the kenwood mentioned earlier is a pretty damn decent price for the options
