Trucks and SQ systems...
So I just want to see if anyone does installs or set-up of SQ systems in trucks... I'm doing an install in my 91 S10 extended cab truck and I'm having a difficult time finding information on correct position of speakers for staging and imaging.
Has anyone else done a similar install or have some insight on this type of application?

My goals for the truck are basically to have a very clean, warm sound with proper staging ... I don't like muddled sound or anything that sounds out-of-place. It's basically all about the sound for me, the install will be very low key with some subtle fiberglass details, but mainly stock looking.
My biggest dilemma right now is trying to figure out which speakers I need in which places. I have a pair of 6.5, 5.25, and 4" clarion speakers. The 6.5's and 5.25's are the top of the line signature, and the 4" are their mid level components.
I work at the local car audio shop, but I have never built, or spent a considerable amount of time designed a system strictly for the way it sounds. However with my own personal vehicle, I want to get the best sound that I can possibly get.
This is my first year in the industry so right now I am just trying to gather as much information as I can in order to create a vehicle that people can sit in, and have a great listening experience.

I have an S-10 pickup, non extended cab, I won tons of IASCA Sq comps with it. You only need a very good 4 inch mid and tweet in the dash, but you have to be creative...I had Q forms (yuck) - door speakers...dash worked best. If you are close to Kamloops, the Island or the coast we could meet up. I have a full picture book detailing everything. I have owned my truck since new.

hey westec,
If you could maybe PM me some pics of your truck that would be great. I live in the kootenays in creston wich is about 6 hours away from you i believe.
Did you just use a good set of 6.5 component door speakers? I'll be building some custom lower door panels out of fiberglass to mount the midbass driver, and i had thought about maybe the A-pillar or high in the door panel to mount the corresponding tweet.
Being as how I have an extended cab, would it even be necessary to put a 5.25" midrange in the rear of the truck? Ill be running my 2 subwoofers back there anyways...

I find rear fill in a small cab is totally unnecessary. I have tweeters in the dash, 5 1/4 in the doors and a single 10" behind the drivers seat which fires into the rear wall. Technically the front stage could use some improvement but it sounds great and it's pretty stealth. Try different sub woofer positions before committing to something permanent. The way I have mine set up gives the illusion that the bass is coming from the dash.

that would make sense to me, i might try something similar. What i will probably end up doing is mounting the 4" components in the dash with the tweeters and the 6.5's in the door as a midbass with the tweeters mounted higher up , either in the A-pillars, or high in the door panels.
The only other thing im wondering about is kickpanels... would a truck really benefit from a midrange in the kicks?

If you're going to put mids in the kicks then you should have you have your tweets there too. I find vehicles with set ups like this have good imaging but the stage height is compromised. It works well for imaging and the center stage is high but the extreme left and right often sounds lower giving you an arched stage.
