Tweeter

Hey, I have some Alpine SPX-117 tweeters and midrange drivers in my car..
and I blew a tweeter on the weekend.. I kinda can't imagine blowing it with too much power because I'm running an 8 gage wire to four speakers.. on an amp that only pushes 50RMS*4..
are there any other things that could have blown the tweets?
I have an 80hz crossover on the amp running.. and the crossover set on my premier deck...
and it still blew?
any ideas..? should I return it to the store or just buy a new one from somewhere?

could not find the SPX-117, do you mean the SPX-17Ref set?

A few things that can cause that.... wrong crossover points, clipping, distortion. Make sure your amp gain for that channel isn't set to max, and set you crossover for the tweeters at around 3khz if you are running active.

It may have just been a bad tweeter.

Alpine SPX-177R there we go, figured that one out..
thanks for your help.
I'm going to replace the tweeter either through the store or just buying another.. and then install the crossovers that came with the speakers.. I hadn't had time to install them yet..
thank you

you hooked up the tweeters and the midrange to the 4 channel amp, tweeters on 2channels and mids on the other 2...right? Crossover on the amp was set to 80hz for the mids, and what was the pioneer set to for the tweeters?

I'm an idiot and I had the cross over set to *pass* so.. I set it to 200hz to be safe.. and then went to Pass by accident the other day.. so the deck wasn't using a cross over at all.. and I imagine the 80hz crossover wasnt high enough right? and that's why it blew?

If I can't get it replaced through alpine, where would I look for a new set? are they sold individually?

not likely anymore as they're discontinued, but still worth a call to Alpine. If you can't find the exact same tweeter, look for a set as close to those as you can find...the new spx pro series uses 32 mm ring radiator tweeters, which I'll bet are almost identical in performance (probably the same tweeter with a different casing). Those you may be able to get a set or even individually since they are a current product. Otherwise, forget the Alpine tweets and get a set of tweeters with similar response from Solen.ca, or Madisound.com, and go from there.

its no wonder that manufacturers, won't warranty stuff anymore without being installed but the dealer.

you may as well kiss your money goodbye because there is no way Alpine will warranty that tweeter, those crossovers have built in tweeter protection, to prevent malfunction.

I recommend that you take this to someone that knows what they are doing!
