I know this question pops out a lot and I've read quite a few posts already. But I don't think it hurts to hear some fresh ideas. OK, on to business. I have 2 potential places in my car where I could install my tweets from my new component set.

1. in the all too common sail panel angled mounted pointing in the general direction of the driver and passenger (I wanted to try flush mount but there's no room)

2. flush mounted right on the door panel around 10" above where the 6.5" woofer will be. This is around just above someone's knees when sitting in the car.

I'm going try to test them out at different locations but I'm always open to others opinions.

After doing hours and hours of testing and many months of reading this is what I came up with. I placed the 6.5” driver in a triple coated sound dampened door and sealed all the wholes up. Placed both the mid/tweet together in the kick panel area facing the dome light. Once this was done I noticed my sound stage was about half a foot to low. So I’m currently testing my tweeters in my A Pillars and it sounds great. I had a 2-way set and even with my 3-way I had tweeters in the sail panel, middle and high up in the door. Mids in the doors and 6.5” drivers in kicks. So I can tell you I had every speaker all over the place but they never sounded better then the current setup.

You can test all you want but after understanding PLD and on-off axis response you might fine these locations to be right for you as well. Of course I had the iasca cd to help me pin point the problems and help me along with angles and stuff.

A pillar firing across from each other, on axis, or any other direction, dash corners, doors closer to midrange, kick panels...and pretty much anywhere else they'll fit. I usually get the dum dum, silly putty or plasticene out and try it everywhere until I like what i hear, then i start tweaking the angles. Honestly, tweeters are the easiest speakers to get the right positioning. With mids and woofers, it's very limited unless you want to redesign your interior.

To answer the Q... option 1 appears to be the better option. If you are open to other solutions then I recommend doing a 'mock up' where the drivers are temporarily located in different places (like the ones denonite and cioppaf discuss) and held in place with Velcro or duct tape (I use painters tape). Every car has some unique features and can be optimized but it is best if you use your ears to define what is best for you
