I wondered whether there were any others out there with an Alpine 5700. Whenever I mention DAT to people they just give me this blank stare...

Except that I have 2 cars and only 1 5700 (it never occurred to me to buy a second one 12 years ago 'just in case'), so that I have had to re-record all of my DATs onto CD using a Tascam-700 recorder.

But I still love DAT for the car. If only the 5700 had a digital out...

I didn't even know any DAT Car players ever existed. Let's remember I was playing with Tonka Trucks when they came out. I would like to use a DAT deck to record shows, but they are so expensive, bigger then MD decks, and can be damaged so easily. They are like a VCR you can put in your pocket. I just use MD, sharp make better recorders the sony. I can't here the compression. Most artists wouldn't care about the guy recording the show. Their record company doesn't want those recordings out there because they could loose money.
You don't have the right to record a performance, that's why the tickets say "No Audio/Video Recorders". I would have loved to record ZZ Top last night, but my mics are being repaired and I didn't get them back in time.

DAT's are still very much used i nthe recording indusrty. More so in small portable, and home studios, Cheapest way to digitaly record up to 8 chanels of audio. I've got an alesis ADAT recorder inthe closet that hasnt been used in a while Hard disk racording has come down in price, a ton, and can do way more chanels silmutanesously (I can do 16 with my modest system.)
