I have listened to a number of cars with upfront subs, and for every good one -i have probably heard equally bad ones.

i think the biggest reason for him crossing them so high was the inability of the FST midrange to play any midbass frequencies. the extremely limited excursion had its limits for low end but made up for it with extreme volume in the highs. B&W themselves cross the sub/mid at 400hz for all speakers using the FST. (i used to have the nautilus 803's)

Heard someone tried gutting out the glove box and custom built in a sub enclosure............. but never heard anything like that in operation
