Mr. Marco 08-02-2003 11:16 PM

Hello,
I'm looking for some High end SQ mid-ranges (must be 4"). i haven't seen anything in the commercial car audio world that i really like... i have been offered eurosport mids, as well as Eton mids but i've had no experience with either.

I read about Accuton, Seas, dynaudio etc and wonder if anyone has had experience with them.

Accutons come accross as amazing speakers but alot of speakers complain about their off-axis response... i will have a pretty good aim with the speakers and that's part of the reason i need 4" for.
i need a 4" that will cover all the vocal range...

any recomendations out there?

This is a good resource for getting driver info.
I was about to consider Eton, or Seas, but I decided to cheap out and wait a bit.
Unfortunately, I saw no 4" Accuton driver, only a 5".
From what I understand, you're ok with 8 ohm drivers, as you said you're looking out of the commercial car audio marked.
I myself had to go with a 5¼" driver for vocal range (200-2.4k) because of the lack of available 4" drivers. There shouldn't really be a problem, providing there isn't excessive xmax with the driver, which isn't needed with vocal drivers.

That driver looks a helluva lot like the Alpine Type Z drivers that have a 4 digit price tag to them!!

Right from the midbass, midrange, tweet.. Its all scanspeak. Only major change is the physical size of the tweet.

Chadxton 08-03-2003 11:34 AM

And the price. I swear one could get away paying way less by just getting those.

chev2 you're my hero.

It's still a 2k set even if you buy the pieces from madisound for example. the tweeters are 900 by them selfs, and are 5" dia. lol.

The mids with a different tweet is the way to go, i think.

Chadxton 08-03-2003 12:33 PM

You sir, are wrong.
I see a price for $175 USD each driver for the 5".

chev2 08-03-2003 01:05 PM

Hmmmm OK.

The tweet is the R2904/7000 ring radiator.. madisounds price is 450.00 US EACH.

The 4" mid is the 12M/4631G for 224.00 US EACH.

The 7" midbass is the 18w/4531G-00 for 224.00 US EACH.

While they do have 5" mids for 175.00, that is not the driver that alpine uses.

Chadxton 08-03-2003 01:29 PM

Oh, cool.

But the 5" IS a valid performer, correct?

Mr. Marco 08-04-2003 08:23 AM

Holly mother of tranducers!!!
i want that scan-speak!! its perfect!! amazing frequency response (although low on power handling).

now where to get it for a good price?!?!
I've checked out Solen but they are crazy expensive!! parts exprss doesn't have them...
where?!?!?!

chev2 08-04-2003 09:24 AM

www.madisound.com

Angus 08-05-2003 05:41 PM

is solen really that much more than madis..? i belive solen prices are already canadain..

i was thinking about getting a pair of the 7" midbass's

Mr. Marco 08-05-2003 06:13 PM

Angus, i see you alot on Elite hunting for some sweet equipment...that is you right?

btw, puresoundquality will be selling his once he;s done testing them. here's his email to me:

"...I am not selling the scan speaks yet only because I wanted to do an a/b comparison between them, accuton c92-t6 and a eton driver. As soon as I am done I will be posting them up for sale... I think someone is selling some scan-speaks on elite right now"

talk about serious shlit! he also has a set of Dynaudio Esotar 330's!

Solen has some good and some bad prices... on scan speak they are actually cheaper than bringing it over the border but at 660+ tax for the revelators, its too much for my budget..
maybe they will pop-up on ebay...

chev2 08-05-2003 06:18 PM

you could always do a set of the morel MW114-S, or the Eton 400-hex's.. Both are half the price of the scan 4".

Angus 08-05-2003 06:25 PM

Ya.. thats me.. heh.. i tend to buy on impulse

i think i talked to him before.. he was gonna email me when he was selling em...

I got my vifa pl's in mail today.. very beefy drivers...

still waiting on my vifa mg's.. they should be here shortly.. hopefully

Mr. Marco 08-05-2003 08:00 PM

Chev2,
have you had any experience with either the morels or the Eton? i like them both.. great build quality. any idea on their frequency response? however, they are almost as deep as they are wide!at least 2 1/4" depth...damn...not great for the space in my car...
the scanspeak is much lower...its amazing. i also see the accutons, but at 75m for even its 3" mid its nuts.. plus i keep hearing their off-axis response is not the greatest...

choices choices choices

SPL Freak 08-05-2003 11:40 PM

Take a look at the Focal line up, there a very nice sounding speaker.

chev2 08-06-2003 06:30 AM

I have used the eton 4" mid.. Great mid, i would use it again. Its one of the deepest at 2.6+"'s though. I have always been a fan of the morel stuff, always seems to impress.

Most 4" mids are 2-2.25"s deep.. The scans are a little narrower..

If you want something really narrow, and are ok with crossing the midbass/midrange over around 800hz, you could go to a dome midrange like a dyna or the morel dome. something like this: http://www.morel.co.il/car/component...nge/cdm54.html

Best 4" I have heard out of the car market is actually IMO the old RF Power 4". Now you wanna talk about a driver as deep as it is wide....

are those the same ones that are in your brothers Daytona?

Mr. Marco 08-06-2003 10:05 PM

Dukk, those were very very nice mids... kind of wolfs in sheep's clothing!

I've come accoss a really good deal on CDT eurosport 4" mids ($150 cad shipped). they just might do the job for now. I'm trying to get some industry contacts on the 4" revelators (scans) but no luck yet... they would be perfect!!

any thoughts on the CDT compared to Etons, morel and scan-speaks?

Chadxton 08-06-2003 10:11 PM

Revelators are crazy!!

Know what I'd like to see in a car? A pair of Manger bending wave drivers. Whooeee!!

TomK 08-07-2003 08:20 AM

I have a set of high end Audax 4" sitting on the shelf going to waste. Don't remember the model number but they were pretty penny back in the days when I got them....... like $300 to $400 for ea driver. It's a home audio driver. So long story short, don't forget to check out Audax.

They can handle the power and sound extremely lifelike. I've never questioned not using those in whatever setup I've had. I highly recommend picking up a pair on Ebay.

Here is a really bad pic of one along with my FNQ tweeter:

Paul Niwranski 08-07-2003 12:52 PM

I agree with Tom - Audax should always be kept in mind. They have such a range of drivers from dead cheap to high end that you can literally choose how nice a driver you want to afford

When I look at 'home' mids my short list always winds up being Morel, Seas, Eton, Audax.

Mr. Marco 08-07-2003 07:13 PM

Tom,
Shoot me the model number and a price and we can work somethng out.

thanks,
Marco
