what am I missing here?

been trying to get my system sounding ok and am getting nowhere
The original plan was to purchase some reasonable mid end parts to compose the system, mount the speakers in the factory locations, just generally to a basic install that would sound ok. I'm not looking to compete or make a lot of noise, just have a decent sounding stereo inside my car. The crappy little system inside the house sounds infinitely better than the one inside the car, yet costs easily a tenth of the amount.
The problem is that the car has no midrange definition, the highs are fine and dandy but anything midrange is just getting lost. This is giving the music a very hollow and shallow sound. Not to mention that a lot of midlevel frequencies seem to be biasing towards to passenger side of the car. So my sound stage, if you can call it that, seems to be at the passenger side a-pillar, rather than in the middle.
What am I missing here, will deadening the doors be the magic element that I'm missing? I have never spent so much money on something and been totally lost.
now please note, that I'm fairly new to this whole car audio thing

Check the polarity of your drivers. If you are lacking low-end response and you have a confused center image that tends to stick to one side, you may have a driver that is out of polarity. Oddly though, sometimes switching polarity on the midrange of a 3-way front stage can improve the sound. Anyway, double-check it to make sure.

^ right and after that, if you have a gain control on your amp, adjust it and the x-over to see if perhaps by some chance you have them set wrong.
Assuming you're using the passive x-over from your comp set, it shouldn't make a HUGE difference but hopefully an audible one.
