yo can take a piece af crap, polish, shine throw 3 coats of wax on it and in the end its still a piece of crap. if you start with crap or insert crap anywhere in line, it will be difficult to end up with anything more than shiza. being that car audio compared to home audio, there are typically more components in line, its important that whatever your signal is being modified by be of very high quality, or else there will be compromise. there is no one most important piece, they are all eqaully important. what is most important is to not compromise, be it cd player, amps, speakers, or install, there can be no compromise, and if there is compromise, the most impostant piece will be the one you made the compromise for, because that will define the system, and dicslose the weak link, just my 2 bits

I think the speakers, along with how they are installed, make the biggest impact on a system and how it sounds. That's why I think the speakers are the most important part of a system. Installation is also the most crucial when it comes to the speakers.
You can install a deck by taping it to the carpet, and it will sound the same as installed molded and flushed into the dash.
You can install an amp by wedging it between the spare tire and trunk floor, and it will still sound the same as in a painted fiberglas amp rack with welded aluminum tube and lighted plexiglas accents.
You can install speakers in the stock locations and throw the sub in a prefab box or screw it to the rear deck and it WILL sound a lot different than if you install (for example) the mids in aimed kickpanel pods, tweets in the a-pillars and the sub in a carefully designed and constructed box facing the right way in the trunk.
After speakers and installation, then would come tuning.

^^^^ ahhhhhhh some well thought out, reasoned responses... thanks boys -- Sux I have to admit your arguement is very convincing.... please consider this:
Taking "the perfect install" as a given, what is the best system:
a) $250 deck $500 speakers
b) $500 deck $250 speakers
c) $375 deck $375 speakers
I can see merits to b and c -- but I don't care how long I live you will NEVER make me live with a $250 deck... that's my 2 cents...
