the RE XXX is a very loud sub, with very good power handling. But it also sounds excellent, I've told the story often of how a friend of mine put one up against a JL W7 of the same size, in a simliar box, both optimized for the same response. and a JL product rep chose the XXX as the better sub in front of a crowd of people.

No matter which speaker you choose, the cabinet will be the determining factor as to how ANY speaker will sound best for SPL & SQ.
I would not recommend a 3 woofer system, a number of problems may arise, try to keep an even(2-4) number of woofers.
You will find that any woofer will sound different in different shape and size of box, just like your voice sounds different in different rooms.

For subs... shape not likely to change the sound - unless the shape restricts the airspace significantly.

Voices sounding different in different rooms is because of the reflections (or lack of) off the surfaces in the rooms that you hear. This would be analogous to speakers sounding different in different rooms.

^ I disagree to a point. An enclosure with all parallel walls can be differant than that of a rounded enclosure.

As I said, not for subs - wavelength is too long for it to matter. Make the walls rigid, and you're done.
