alternator replacement week
 

well last week the alt crapped out on my mom`s car (donated a three amp system for her, maybe thats why the stock unit bit the bullet), and this morning my wife was complaining that her car was making a funny noise. i popped the hood and my digital anl fuse holder from my big three was reading 12.2 volts. i pretty much figure that alt is toast as well.

now, since my system is in her car and i have to replace the alt now anyway, does anyone know of any local alt shops in the gta area that carries heavy duty, or high ouput units?

the car is a 98 malibu, and i would like to move into something around the 160-200amp range.

any suggestions?

ok i spoke to raymond at sva sales and his customer service is outstanding.
but although he sent me in the right direction and will make my decision tomorrow, i`m still confused about what alt i need for my specific application?

i figure my system puts out between 2500-2700 watts (gestimate) so i figure roughly i would need an alt with a 170 amp output or bigger. now keeping in mind about output levels at certain rpm`s i`m still at a crossroad of moving into a 200 amp or bigger unit?

i also has a conversation with a local shop and had the fear of god instilled about possible pully, idle, and belt wear issues with the bigger alts. anybody have any experience with all this?

only thing i had to do was make a new bracket extension for my alternator...and get a slightly bigger belt....id say ur only problem will be if the alternator is a diffrent size then stock, externally. ur tensioner shouldnt be affected whatsoever, as long as it stays in the same position(alt moves further away, u get bigger belt tensioner dosnt know any better)...as for belt wear, i never had a problem with that, although i was running a v-belt, u still shouldnt see a problem, but if u do, it wont be for a while and belts are cheap...im saying all this like its no big deal cuz it wasnt for me, im an automotive apprentice so i have access to all this stuff...other then those minor issues its well worth it....and like i said, any problems with the alt and it will be handled instantly(i switched mine between 3 cases so i could keep it on all my cars, just sent it out and got it back asap)great company and service to deal with...

thanks for all the help guys. i`m having a alt shipped from sva today. the customer service is outstanding and went over my requirements in great detail through e-mail and extensive phone conversations.

i went with their thunder series alt, and he played with the pully size to get a little more amps in the bottom end, so i may require a different belt but i`ll have to see when its put in.

all in all this company seems to be the real deal with knowledge and expertise to fit anybody`s electrical needs, and was assured that this is carried through after the sale as well until i am completely satisfied.

i got my alt this morning and limped my car over to the local alt shop to have it installed. i wanted to try it myself, but i wanted it put on the amp meter to see what it was putting out.

i was disappointed to see at idle (750 rpm) it was only putting out maybe 40-50 amps at 13.3 volts. normally at idle i was getting a steady 14.4. but when brough up around 2000rpm + the numbers were hitting almost 180 amps. i informed raymond of this over the phone (many a phone call with him this morning) so he suggested getting another alt with a lower top end which would bring the bottom end higher. he`s putting together another one for me for monday.

getting the correct alt for a specific application is not a walk in the park like i thought, but luckly, sva power products is not happy until your happy.
