Aluminum

I have been cutting, drilling, plasma cutting, bending, tapping, and grinding aluminum for the past 4 days!!!!!
I've clearly been watching too many episodes of "American Chopper" thinking this stuff is easy.
At this point, I'm starting to question my sanity. But, then again I was up past midnight again getting covered in aluminum dust and sweating my *** off contorted inside the trunk of my car.
This stuff is a workout...my whole body aches.
Back to the grind...(literally)

Plus if you were doing it the American Chopper way you would buy a part from another company, weld some crap on it, send it out for someone else to paint or plate it, and then stand back with your shades on and take all the glory.
Oh oh, I have a bad feeling I just changed your post into a American Chopper discusion......sorry

It's the creativity, imagination and ideas that allow you to accept the praise.

On the subject of welding...does anyone know if you can weld 16 gauge steel to the frame of the car inside the engine compartment?
I am planning on welding a bracket from the frame of the engine to the fram on the car, anyone have any suugestions or tips on how to proceed with this?

The only issue with working with aluminum is that you have to plan ahead.
Everything has to be dead on, there's not room for error like you have when working with wood. For example, I'm tapping every hole so I don't need to use nuts when bolting everything together. This means that I have to tap everything at a perfect 90 degree angle, or the bolts will not line up from hole to hole.
What am I doing?
Rebuilding my trunk and subwoofer mounting with aluminum. (Alpine PXA-H900 is getting a sweet new home!)

Now Adam, you ARE doing something to counteract the resonance effect aluminum will have once sound frequencies bounce off it from reflection and screw up your imaging, right? Just being silly. 1/2" plate should be pretty solid. I have worked with some 1/16" stuff as trim pieces on my kicks and you gotta treat it like glass almost to make sure you don't gall it, scratch it or just plain mess it up. And routering it was interesting! Sure looks pretty when done though.
