A 1000 watt RMS amp will put out 1000 watts peak without distortion.
To get 100% out of your sub give it 1/2 a watt less than what will burn it up, lol.

but does every sub not differ? i burned up a old kicker cvr by giving it rated power. and it was not getting distorted power.

What kind of sub are you running? How much are you looking to spend?

That last 1/2 a watt is a killer tho eh.

Seriously...any amp will put out nearly double it's RMS if it's clipped.
And keep in mind the time factor. A sub's coils won't melt down with a brief spike above the peak thermal power, but if the volume is left up high for too long, the coils have no chance to cool down. Thermal power handling only tho.

The mechanical power handling limits are not specified on woofers, as it depends on many variables, mostly box size/type, and frequencies played.

If you're going to drive a speaker to it's absolute limits, it's better to have more clean power than the speaker can handle. Most music has peaks at least 10 times the average RMS, so to keep every peak clean, an RMS output equal or higher than the peak handling of the speaker makes sense.

Driving anything to it's limit comes with some risk, of course, so some sense is required (nothing "common" about it either).
