Amp wiring help!

Hi I'm rather new to car audio and Im doing my first build. I have 2 JL 10w1-4 they're 4 ohm single voice coil and I'm wondering if an older MTX thunder 801D would be sufficient to power them? and if so how should I wire them? I've been doing some research yet its rather overwhelming. Thanks for any help/advice. I also have a clarion apx 400.2 and was wondering which one would push harder? thanks.

Are you sure they are dual voice coil? Does each speaker have 4 individual wire terminals? In my quick research it seems they are only single voice coils. I have a pair of 8" W1V2 JL's and they are single vouice coils. You didn't say what version of W1's you have maybe the V1 or V0 are dual voice coils.

Thanks, I was thinking of type s which are DVC these are intact single voice coils. That being said, what would be the best way to wire them? Thanks.

I would wire the subs in parallel for an overall impedance of 2ohms.

Power them with the MTX. Be very conservative at first with the gains as that amp can deliver more current than JL recommends for your speakers. Save the clarion for some front stage speakers.

thanks, and its an older MTX 801D so it's rated at:
500 watt RMSx1 into 2 ohms
800 watt dynamic power x1 into 2 ohms (14.4 VDC)
so wouldn't it be just right for these subs which are rated at 50-250 watt RMS?

Yah, you should be fine with the MTX. When my car is running my voltmeters read anywhere from 13.8V to 14.4V so you're probably looking at about 800Watts rms. I was thinking 150W range for those 10's but that's not it. Besides I ran 2 of those w1v2's in the 8" size in a sealed box with about 225W a peice and they were fine for over a year untill I decided to go with 12's.

thanks for the help, but due to the fact that there are 2 sets of terminals on the MTX couldn't I wire them like this? Because aren't they connected on the inside of the amp? And aren't they only 500RMS not 800? isn't the 800 dymanic the same as 800 peak? 2SVCmonoblock.jpg?t=1286250039

Your wiring is correct, If you put an ohm meter on the two neg terminals when the amp is not powered you'll see that electrically they are the same point (e.i. zero ohms of resistance).

I think you're right with the dynamic power rating. Maybe someone else on this site can help clarify if there is any difference between dynamic and peak power ratings.

so they'll have a total rating of 2ohms at the amp correct?

Yup, 2 ohms total resistance.
