battery fuse question
battery fuse question
hey guys i need some help
i got 4 gauge wire running from the battery to 3 amps through a splitter that sptils to 3 x 8guage wires
2 x 600W monoblocks and 200W speaker amp
so roughly 1400W
i have been having top of the fuse blow but not the middle recently as I ran 60 amp fuse
i bumped it up to 80amp and it seems better hasnt blew one yet
but when i went to audio video to get extra fuses the manager told me that i need 150amp fuse at the battery as you add up all fuses from combined amps and get a fuse a bit more powerful
When i did a search i found that some people say
1. get a fuse depending on the power wire
2. get a fuse that reflects combined fuses from the amps
Question I had :
1. Would I need to go with 1 or 2nd option listed above
2. Would bigger fuse improve db, sq of the stereo at all? (my guess is no but id like to verify)
Thanks!

You have to do both. The fuse is used to protect the wire if it shorts out so you don't burn your car down. BUT, the fuse also has to be bigger than the max current draw of all the amps combined, because if its not, the fuse will just keep blowing. 150 seems about right, some people go with just bigger than the max current draw as extra safety for your amps.
i was running a 150 amp fuse on anh amp that only draws 25 amps before.....the main purpose of the fuse is to protect the wire in the case of a short but 150 is a fairly large fuse i had my power wire come off and short right to the ground beside it blew sparks everywhere and the fuse didnt go....now im sure if the short had continued for more than a fraction of a secound the fuse would have blown...but i feel safer running a fuse that just a bit bigger than the toal amp draw of all your amps.......say 20 or so amps extra?
