Exclamation

Hey guys,

I just finished the big 3 for my new install and now I have a whine coming from the engine. My speakers/deck/etc. aren't even hooked up yet, so this can't be a good sign of things to come! I did a search, but most topics refer to noise through the system. I didn't have any whining before I did the big 3.
The car is a 95 Regal. The alt. is a new 200A HO built by a CCA board member. I ran 0 awg from the battery directly to the frame in front of it (near the rad), then from the alt. mounting bolt to the front frame (same piece as the battery ground, about 3 ft. apart) and then alt. pos. to battery. I've been putting a lot of time into this install so this is really bugging me.
I really want this noise gone and hopefully have my system going within the next few days. Any help will be extremely appreciated. Cheers.

I'm going to check the grounding point resistances. And I may as well hook everything up. Who knows, perhaps there won't be any system noise.

Pm sent. I'll have a better idea of how the noise issue is after everything is in place. Cheers.

Yes, I'm quite sure the noise is from the alternator. I've physically stuck my head in and put my ear to it (and I can hear it from the cabin anyway). But it's not a stock GM alt (see above). And I've only noticed it immediately after installing the big 3; not before that. It is a HO alt, so perhaps some noise is expected. This is frustrating though, as it seems it could be any number of things (diode, rectifier, ground loop, bearing, bad battery....)

Disconnect the regulator plug to the alternator. Start the engine.

If the noise is gone, then the noise is the alternator working it's hiney off due to a discharged battery, or some part in the altrenator is just a noisy part

If the noise is NOT gone, then it's a bearing, or some other unrelated thing.

Thanks Grizz, I'll try that. Here's hoping it's just a bad battery. I assume it's safe to disconnect the regulator plug ?...
