Blown Speakers?

I once blew a speaker in my 78 Celica....was pretty cool......smoke and everything.... [img]graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]
Anyway.....
Generaly when I think I have blown a speaker,I turn all my balance and fade to that one focal point...have a listen.....If dude singing sounds like hes got a mouth full of tinfoil....congrats,you be the pround owner of one blow speaker...or two...or......
Or for that matter,if it doesnt work at all....

The first thing to check is that the cone moves in and out freely... If it scratches or is seezed it's blown.... (or the coil has jumped the gap and become stuck, which I've never actually seen)
If it has no continuity, check the tinsel leads to see if they are broken or burned off... if not you probably shorted the VC...
(although the tinsel leads can burn off inside the speaker -take it apart and see if you can repair it... you have nothing to lose, right?)

If you fried the speaker, one good way to tell is to press down on the cone, you may hear some nasty grinding noises. If that happens, chances are they received a bit too much power. Be sure to disconnect it if that happens as it could be presenting your amp/deck with a lower impedance.
If there is an electrical short in the speaker, there could be no visible damage. Might wanna check terminal connections etc.
