The Type S, which I have, is 300W.

http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=SWX-1243D RMS of the TypeX is 1000W.

That sub is indeed a 4 ohm DVC driver. Wire the voice coils in parallel right at the sub, and only use one +/- terminal at the amp.

You'd get more out of a TypeR, with that amount of power. The X will work, you just won't be getting the most out of that driver. How much are you buying it from your friend for? Might be able to get a new TypeR for the same price.

[QUOTE=skiddae;445335]

this is the way my buddy told me to set it up and now i'm questioning it.

QUOTE]

First off good call questioning that. Second ask your buddy not to give any more advice on car audio to anyone until he learns what he is doing. If that had in fact been a 4ch amp you would probably be looking for a new one right now after he hooked it up that way. Check this thread out before you go too much farther.

There are several links there to some very good info about car audio.
It will help to do some reading at this point and become more familiar with some of the terms and concepts you will be dealing with. Learn as much as you can now, trust me this is just the start for you. Car audio is more addictive then heroin and cocaine combined. In some cases more expensive too.LOL
Your options for a sub or subs are:

1 sub - 1x single 2ohm or 1x dual 4ohm voice coil sub that is rated 500-600 watts rms not max. NEVER look at max wattage only use RMS wattage numbers.

2 subs - 2x single 4ohm or 2x dual 2ohm voice coil subs that are rated 250-300wrms each.

Any one of those 4 ways will use your amp and subs to their max and should sound pretty good.
Hope this helps, anything you need to know just ask. Don't forget the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask before your amp, HU, etc started smoking. LOL

You mustn't release the magic Smoke, as once it has been let out it cannot be replaced. Lol

Forget about the max wattage, only ever go by the RMS ratings.

Well you can blow a sub just as fast by underpowering it by 400watts as you can by overpowering it by 1000watts. The tendency is to crank up the gains because hey I have a 1000watt sub, why isn't it louder. So up the gains go sending a clipped signal to the sub, which is bad. Saying you will never blow the sub is totally wrong just because it is underpowered. Just thought I would throw that out for you before you wonder why your sub isn't working.

the alpine website shows that the sub has an rms rating of 500-1000w so i think i should be in the clear.

OK I think you are going to have a problem with that box if it is the size you say it is and there is only one driver in it. According to Alpine the 12" type x wants a sealed box with an internal volume of 0.6 to 1.25 ft3. You are going to need to measure the box and post up the outer dimensions. Also make sure it is sealed and not ported. What is the thickness of the wood. Is it a prefab box off the shelf? Or was it custom made to the Alpine specs? Let us know this info and we can let you know if that box will work or not.

oh, yea i know what the specs are, i don't know what kind of box it is, but i know it's 3/4 MDF
i was going to make another one anyways.. and actually i heard from someone who works at alpine that it sounds a lot better in a bigger box than the specs on paper.
