you can get a deck with aux input and just go that route, but again, why?

Yes it can be done.
I did it in a '97 tercel. Click here to see my schematic. If you want to see other stuff I did with my tercel click on my little www icon with a picture of a house and it will take you to my page.
I now have a '97 Subaru, still running both units but instead of using the mess of relays, I am using an FM transmitter - basically a deck with an AUX input would be easier. It can be done. If you have any questions, fire away.

The answer: (at least in my case)
I have a 1 year old son. We have a lot of kids music on tape. For that reason my wife said, "we're keeping the cassette deck so he can listen to his music" - to which I needed to find a solution so I could still have my cd-player.
Ideally, my CD-player should have an aux input - that is the easiest way to run it. But until I buy a cd-player with an aux, I will use alternative methods.
Dotman - if you have an option of using an aux input of some sort, do it. You will only need one or two additional relays to work the set-up. If you don't have an option of aux. input, I recommend an FM-transmitter.
Again, if you have any questions about how to deal with multiple power supplies etc. Post the Q. here or fire me an e-mail.

When I was running the cd/8track setup, I simply ran the audios thru a 2 way switch..up for cd and down for 8 track...Power was constant with key in on or acces.
Just a thought...was simple to setup and cheap to setup to....
In fact,now that I'm done with the whole 8 track thing,I'll sell ya the switch all wired,ready to go...It's really of no use to me now...
let me know..
