capacitor check

I know how to charge a cap. How do you test a cap to know if it works?

Disconnect the power and ground from the cap. short the terminals. If you get a big *** spark then the cap works fine

I'm sure if you looked back far enough, you'd find something similar...

Don't Short the Cap out, that can be harmful

Use a multi meter and check the voltage of the Cap. If it is above 12V then your good to go..

^ BS.

Shorting the type of cap that we use for car audio will not damage it - well other than the big black marks and potentially some metal loss on the terminals

Not that I was serious in the first place.. If you want to waste your time checking it, I would charge it up to 14.5 volts and, as Haunze said, let it sit disconnected and measure the voltage after a few days. It shouldn't drop more than about a volt a week.

Thanks for all your help. I'll use the volt-meter approach rather than the other more "shocking" way.

Disconnect your fuse at the battery, and turn on your amp.. it should turn on and then slowly die.
