enclosing a speaker
I was going to see if I could enclose the rear of my speakers with something (plastic, foil etc ) so that they keep dry from possible leaks in the door, Will this effect sound? I mean will they get air enough to move or do they need to be open in the back? Crutchfield sell something like this for 5.25's and 6x9's but not sure how they are made in regards to vents and whatnot..

make sure there a stamped steel basket and then weld in some sheet metal to fill the holes. foil, plastic and etc will all crack and fall off and sound terrible. if you want to do it right, weld in the sheet metal, speaker will be 100% waterproof, sound amazing and be more accurate.
good luck, ive done it, works great!

if you dont want to do it, i offer this service, depending on the speaker will depend on the price. 600 dollar speakers are pretty cheap tho, so shouldnt be too big of a deal.
you could always get marrine audio speakers that were designed to get wet and are sealed.....

cheap? Maybe for you. Anybody working for a living might not think the same way. All I want to know is if they are sealed from behind will it degrade the sound any. I just don't think taking a nice set of components and burning off all the powder coating and gobbing full of weld is a smart way to go. They do make a rubber surround for the backs of them that go between the mounting lip and the panel. I was thinking something like that.

600 dollars a set is pretty entry level IMO. But if thats high end to you, so be it.
Sticking things to the back will yeild terrible results, fluttering noises, things falling off, and pottentialy inside the driver causing a failure.
Welding is the best way around that, gobs??...obviously youve never seen a quality weld before, it looks amazing and could be re painted.
If your uncomfortable with that and insist on river crossing your vehicle where the speakers will be submerged. Id highly recomend MARINE AUDIO drivers, they are built to take the abuse of water and open space.
