I guess all I'm trying to say is I like to buy local but in return I expect to be treated fairly. The head unit was bought used so that's why they didn't get a kick at the sale.
All four of my Infinity speakers (over $400 worth) and my 611A Infinity amp came from this store not to mention Ipod plus a ton of home audio, computer, cell phones, a $1400 Harmon Hardon receiver, Athena speakers, Valodyne sub, etc etc etc.
So I do support them.
I don't mind paying a premium within reason but $40 is not fair market value. I called two other places - Kawartha TV who had to order and a place in Oshawa and they both were $20-$25. Wasn't worth the drive to Oshawa so....
I may be completely off track, but I can't help but think that the kits just happen to be so expensive because they are trying to be in a position to say "you know the kit plus the harness is about $70. We can install it for you for the same price".
If thats the case (and I may be wrong), I don't like being manipulated into buying their service. They do have the right to charge whatever they want and I have the right to shop where I want so, problem solved!

your idea in the last post of how it works is wrong, some of the kits are expensive and some are priced really well, but regardless if you were buying $70 of install accessories and wanted an install, then you would get charged the $70 for the accessories and still get charged an install fee. If future shop is installing something for you then you are still responsible for the cost of the accessories on top of the install fee.

My buddy bought a used DD headunit, GPS, Bluetooth, IPod etc. off Kijij.
He asked me on Friday to install all of it on Saturday for him as he is heading south next weekend. So obviously I needed a dash kit. His truck was a 2003 F350 which technically does not hold a DD.
So I was going to use a Metra 5818. None of the local shop had one so I called FS Friday and was told he had one in American (not Metra) and it was $30. Wow, it's $13++ online and 20-25 at most car audio stores. My buddy said he would pay it just to get it done. He got their Saturday and they said it was $39.95 ! He told them I was quoted $30 over the phone, they said Nope! He paid it to get it done.

I see this as punishing the customer for not letting them install it. They think they won but little do they know I have spent over 10K there in the last 10 years on from every department in the store.
I will do my best to plan out future purchases on all electronics that do not include FS.
correct me if I am wrong, you were quoted a price for a product, you payed $9 more than the price agreed upon and the product was exactly what you needed and was brand new... nope I am not going to get worked up over $9

...but I think I would plan out my purchases in the future and be a faithful customer to those retailers who are loyal and courteous to me. Was this a vaseline job... no, was this something that would make me come back... nope. This is why I have harped about the small box retailers and the value they hold, but they too have to make a living and profit is essential to all businesses... my bottom line is I am loyal to those who are loyal to me.

You make good points. They have been good to me in that store over the years. The $9 just stung more because when I hung up the day before after being quoted $30 there and 20-25 else where, and Sonicelectronics sells it for $12.95, I was already thinking "30 is a little rich" and I guess I was mad at myself for leaving it to the last minute. But then to have my buddy go there to get it, and it's 40, well... that did it.

I am very loyal to businesses that treat me right locally but I am a shitty customer because I am not the type that goes back and screams to straighten something out, I just don't do back. Basic customer service 101 states that those screaming irate customers actually are good customers if you can sort out their issue, they will come back most times.

xtremetoronto:

I see your point, those low prices they quote do not include the kit & harness, so my theory is wrong. But now my theory is that why the kits are so expensive, it subsidizes the low install rate, kind of like admin fees at Leons 0 interst sale.

And I agree, there are great installers at some of the Futureshops, and I certainly am not commenting on the installers ability at the Peterborough store, only the pricing strategy of FS.

They advertised in their flyer $50 to install a head unit. You will know the hidden charges (harness mount kit etc) when you walk in.
I have a feeling the car audio installers are contractor renting the little shop next door to impress customers. May have nothing to do with FS.

future shop/best buy could give you free installs and free dash kits and people would still complain...

for some reason, people seem to love bashing these shops, yet they make more money than half the independent ones out there...

so what, people have stories about poor work that has happened there, or things that have gone wrong... what about the stories of good service? nobody ever mentions them.

my first aftermarket deck was bought there. they told me everything i needed, and what it would cost. the guy even said they'd do free installation. this deck was also an open box item, so keep this in mind. 2 weeks later my deck was cutting in and out. without ANY questions, they gave me a brand new deck, re connected it, and the issue never happened again. i paid much less than the BRAND NEW deck cost, and got one for free to replace my open box one, without any hassle.

how come stories like this never make it to the forums? mind you i dont work there nor worship the ground they step on, but my local future shops/ best buys have treated me just fine.

I don't think anyone here disputes if FS has the unit you want and you can just go and grab it, that they are a good place to buy the larger items from with their excellent return policies etc. It's just annoying sometimes when you do support them with substantial coin; then when you need support with the smaller items, they hose the out of you.
My point is if I had bought that 10K+ worth of stuff that I have bought from FS from a smaller local shop, I guarantee you when I went in for the install kit, he would have tossed it to me N/C. I know FS can't do that, I would just like to see them remain competative on the small stuff. Not $40 for a item priced at $20 everywhere else.
The smaller shops lose regularily now to the bog box store pricing and selection but they seem to still be able to treat you fair when you need help with the smaller stuff.

No free lunch as well as no free installation.
This week's flyer Sony deck cdxgt550ui $119.99, "car deck w/install 149.00."
This time is special, they charge only $30 for the install.
I will be your butler for 3 months if you can walk out with that HU installed in your car for $149 + tax + envi.
I especially hate when they ask you to buy extended warranty for a $79 microwave. It's insult to my intelligence & time.
