i have two kenwood 10" dvc subs, and i am planning on getting a kenwood 8101D to power them, a step up from my current amp, a kenwood 629s. i will use the 629s to power my components instead, since it is a stereo amp. i know i will get a huge increase in power, since the new amp would put out 400 W at 2 ohms, where my current one only puts out 150 W. is this a good setup, or is this too much power for my subs?

Looks to be a good power match. It would have to be wired at 1ohm as those are dual 4ohm drivers. I don't know how happy that amp is going to be running at 1ohm every day even though it claims 1ohm stability.

Check the For Sale forum here for the MTX 8302 amp Seahag has there. Wire the subs series parallel on that for 425rms at 4ohm mono. It's more power, a better amp, and it's only $170!

i use to run kenwood amps at 1 ohm and they didnt seem to run to too bad.....a little warmer than they should have but didnt fry on me or nothing.....still have those amps today and are in perfect working order...they were kdc-716's part of my very first system

 

i can wire the subs for 2 ohms if i need to, and i can get the amp for 179 locally, which is the main reason i want that amp

 

No. Your options are:
1 ohm - All parallel
4 ohm - series parallel (wire the both coils on the sub in series, - do this with both subs, then wire both subs parallel)
16 ohm - All series

Or Stereo
2 ohm x 2 - All parallel
8 ohm x 2 - All Series.

Those are your only options if you want to use both of those subs.
