Question Help the poor boy with a GM monsoon factory deck

First post, definitely not the last...hoping you guys can help me out.

Want to upgrade factory GM Monsoon deck (200W, apparently 8 ch. (components i suppose) from 2000 sunfire GT)

FYI:
-I went in to get a quote for deck install...~$125 w/out the $80 door chime piece (although I think the pins in my door are gone, so unit won't turn off at all after I open driver's door until the 10 min Retained power turns off, so I have to turn off manually) Therefore, I wouldn't want the door chimes back because that will keep the retained access power there, and I don't care about the chimes, right??
-Hoping I could do it myself with a little help from you guys, I learned how to take the unit out from caraudiohelp.com, but I need to know how to install an aftermarket deck (which I haven't bought yet, looking to ugrade with amp and subs in future)
-I have read this is pretty technical (but people have done it), and have seen some other sites about having to tap into another wire to allow the unit to turn off and on.

-Additionally, I would need the harness, deck mounting kit, and antenna adaptor, correct?

Any Help??

thanks for the suggestion, pretty cool actually

But, the main reason I want to change the deck is because it is getting old, skips every so often, and doesn't play mp3's is my biggest pet peeve..so many CDs

I changed the deck in my 06 GM, it was a lot harder than yours is going to be.
Yes, you need to fix your door switch.
You need to change the deck and the amp and all the speakers. The factory component speakers are ****. There 2 ohm, so you can't run them off the deck. And the factory amp is 4 in 8 out, built in crossovers and puts out a wopping 8 watts rms on all 8 channels. They call that 25 watt max, x 8 is where they get the 200.

All you need is the retained power and chime module. There pretty generic for a 2000. All good car audio shops carry them. Might not be on the shelf, but the install bay will have them.
If you're going to run speakers off deck power, you need a power relay as well, because most retained power modules don't put out enough. Or you can use the power that used to go to the factory amp.

One you have deck power covered, the rest is just a straight forward instal.
Add amps and speakers etc., etc.

Go for it. Do it right.

Thanks for the info, but are you certain I need to change the speakers in addition to the deck, I've heard that you can just change the deck. I don't have the money to change all at once right now anyway, but I'd love to =)

I already have upgraded the rear 6x9's to Infinity 3-ways since I blew the factory ones, still working fine, but the front components I don't want to deal with right now.

As for the chimes, I also was told I didn't need to buy that $90 piece if I didn't care for the chimes, which I don't..and would also solve the problem with the door pins...

I have a 2001 Regal with monsoon and all I did was buy the harness, wire constant and trigger on the deck to constant, and turn it on and off when I want it to. I still have door/alert chimes, all I lost was OnStar which I was not about to pay for anyways. But you do have to replace and rewire the speakers, nothing you can do about that unless you can find a deck that is 2 ohm stable.

Alright, since I've already replaced the rear 6x9's (non component), what size are the speakers up front?

What would be a good component set for the front, best bang for the buck as they say? (I realize I should get comp's for front because the speaker is so low, and the stock setup for the tweeter is pointed up towards the ears in order to properly hear the vocals)

EDIT: stock speakers we're component, but the infinity's I replaced them with were not component..

my stock speakers were component, but the mid was 6", not 6-1/2".

It took some modifyn to fit 6-1/2 " in there. But i'm pretty good with a saw and amazing goop.

Stock speakers in a sunfire should be a 4*6, a sunfire is the easiest car to put a deck into, by the kit, ant adapter and the data module(gmco) the module has the wire harness on it so just connect color to color fron new deck to gmco and slide it in, your stock speakers will sound fine, not good but fine. whole job should take under 30 min good luck
