help with a unique stereo setup, will this work?

Hello, I also have an eclipse, '05

In theory i want to have a stereo in a car with no actual connections to the car. In other words, there is a head unit, amp, battery, mids and tweeters, and subs.

However, none of these will actually be hooked up to the car. Can this be done?

I think this will work, but the head unit will need to be powered somehow. Is there a way to power the head unit without hooking it up to the car. Otherwise, Is there another way to make this work WITH THIS SETUP.

I also have a battery charger to recharge the battery, but this will not have anything to do with the car.

this is all in theory.

Thanks for any advice.

Ya why is a good question...

My van's system is setup kinda like that, but the final connection is to the alternator. So, my five amplifiers are all hooked to my rear batteries. The head unit is hooked to the rear batteries, and instead of hooking the red wire from the HU to an ignition source, I have it hooked to a toggle switch, powered, again, from the rear batteries.

The remote line out from the HU goes through a relay, powered from the rear batteries, and then to a fuse block. There, I have each amp's remote line hooked up, and some power wires for my DVD & screens, and some pretty lighting for in the van.

You can still ground all amps and everything to the vehicle, and the rear batteries, and still have it all seperate. from the car. Then, when you do want the car to charge, you just connect a positive cable from the rear battery to the front battery or alternator, and you're good to go.

My system has that cable running through a solenoid switch, so when the vehicle is off, I can run the stereo as long as I want and not drain the front battery. Turn the vehicle on, and the switch closes, hooking the rear batteries to the charging system.

Running a high powered stereo just on batteries though, is very impractical. As soon as your voltage drops below 12.0 under load, the amps start creating excessive heat, and can start clipping and cook your subs.

When I run my system out at the lake every Canada Day long weekend (headin' out tomorrow WOOHOO!), I take along two big 8D CAT batteries as a big buffer and a charger. I run a power line from the cabin to the van and leave a 30 amp charger on all the time that the system is on. Power at our cabin is very lousy, and after adding the 200ft. of extention cable to get to the van, there's only about 90 AC volts left. So the charger never goes over 14v, unless the stereo system is off.

So... give us more details, why do you want to do this? A leased car that you don't wanna hack up or something?

okay, why i want a setup like this!

its because I don't want to tamper with any factory wires, i'm worried about cancelling the warranty with the car, the mitsubishi service dept. warned me that any stereo installation may void part of the electronic warranty, its a fairly new car, I don't want to risk that.

If I installed a stereo that didn't involve removing my old headunit, could I use the car battery in the car, to power a stereo like this?
I don't want to risk the terrible consequences of using a standalone battery, you've convinced me.

Honestly, the factory stereo sounds great, except that, I want subwoofers.
In other words, here are the new rules..

-can't uninstall anything already oem in the car.
-MAY use the battery under the hood in the car
-can't tamper with factory wires.

It seems the head unit is the only part i'm really concerned about.
Is this easier to make this work now?

thanks again for all the help.

also, thats a very impressive van setup, i bet its alot of fun!

Cool

i modify or add to vehicles everyday day in and day out! i can promise u that u will not void your waranty if u add or wire stuff in! a manufacture can only void your warrenty in the case that the mods or additions were proved to be the problem. now having said that if u have some one work on your car who doesn't understand your vehicles systems or is an amature than yes this can become an issue. how ever if the person working on the vehicle is a capable individual u have no real worries! for that matter i have dealers that constantly send me vehicles to be worked on before the customer even drives the thing out the door. so don't fret too much man. there is realy nothing to worry about! l8r mang!

I drive a mitsubishi, and they have to be able to prove that your modifications cause the malfunction that they're trying not to cover under warranty.

plus, you really don't have to touch the factory wiring, all that I did was plug in a factory head unit wiring adapter, and install power and ground to my trunk, which didn't modify the factory wiring one bit.

Ya, there's a gazillion peripherals that you can safely add to your car nowadays. Go to scosche.com and punch in your car and it'll show you a bunch of stuff they make. And I'm sure some of the guys around here are Scosche dealers.

You could easily addon some subs while retaining the factory stereo system. iPod addins too. Or you could replace the factory head unit like ya said too...

Yes, you're best to get an install shop to do it for you, as they know what they can and cannot do while not getting you in trouble with the warranty cops...

And I'm sure that Mitsubishi can't be too deadset against stuff like that... Their cars are probably the most modified brand out there, no?

Also, your dealer may have an audio shop or at least advice for you. Ask them.

Okay, i think i might try a wiring harness.
The factory HU is an Infinity 6 disk CD changer. 6 speakers.

We'll call this plan 1.
after unhooking the wires connection from the factory HU, which is a disk changer, then hook that connection to one end of the harness, then hook the other end of the harness to an aftermarket HU. Then hook the 12v and remote wire to the fused positive post, with a terminal on the battery under the hood. then speakers to the aftermarket HU, and amp to aftermarket HU, and speakers to amp. something like this work better without electrical problems?

We'll call this plan 2.
If not the above, i'd like to try something easier,
same concept, but no harness, leave the factory stereo completely alone. hook up the aftermarket HU, as stated above. Would this work also, with no problems? Even though the factor stereo is still connected to the car, it wouldn't be turned on, or used.

Thanks for staying with me this far!
