high ground resistance
high ground resistance
Hi everyone, im new to CCA and have a wierd question for all of you.
I recently bought a new (to me) 96 ford aerostar, installed some of my old system from my 93 aerostar. Same deck and sub amp - kenwood deck and phoenix gold zx250. this worked noise free in my older aero and installed in the new one in the same places creates tons of noise.
I have limited it to the amp, there is absolutely no noise through the HU connected to the components.
If i turn on the amp by itself with the ignition OFF(totally disconnected from HU) by jumping the remote wire to power and hooked up temporarily to my components there is no noise. There is also no grounding problem, about .2 ohms. Once i turn on the ignition it jumped to around 22.0 ohms = buzz and hum through speakers(obviously). also be aware that NO rca are connected at all to the amp at this time. If i do connect rca to the amp it makes even more buzz and hum. It doesnt matter if the rca is connected to the HU or not.
I have added extra 4ga ground to the alternator bracket and to the body from the battery. that made the resistance go down to about half- 11 ohms. Added another 1/0 ground to the body and it went to about 7 ohms.
am i just on an adding til it drops to what i want spree? I fear i will need too much more wire as im running out- its really pissing me off - i NEED sub bass! and want to add more power for my components. But wont if its going to be full of noise.
I have also tried running an eight gauge ground from the amp to the battery with no help.
Amp has been in for service and could not duplicate the problem (duhh) so it checks out.
Wierd and Wacky... sucks.

hey, thanks for the replies/help guys...
the amp is not touching metal at all, tested with or without it screwed down.
There is very little rust on the van although it does show it was in a major accident (possible electronic failure?)as the body has work done to it. So far its difficult to know if the frame is even attached to a ground, lol. It is unibody though.

that could be true....just run a groud from your amp to your battery, make sure your battery is grounded well and get rid of the rear amp grounds, its obviously not doing its job
bart... already tried grounding the amp right to the battery (without grounding to the body) and did absolutely nada! Damnit anyways... =) Do you guys think i may have a battery problem too? What the hell, i think ill replace the battery while im at it anyway and see if it does anything, lol.

i had the same problem in my 93 grand marques...........NOTHING i did helped, and i had a tonne of 0 gauge and multiple batteries.......
My conclusion was ........Its A Ford Thing
i sent my amp in for repairs, found nothing, and im using the same amp and eq in my current vehicle with not even the slightest noise.......was very very weird and i never figured it out..........
Good luck to you, sounds like your gonna need it

well i finally replaced the battery with no changes what so ever to my problem. I think Ill try regrounding the factory electronics and see if that changes anything. Kinda odd that the resistance goes up with each individual item turned on though - testing today i had about 50 ohms with ignition, lights, and fan on.

I guess ill be playing around some more like you did mat.
