huge voltage drops time for a second battery?
hey all question
wifes car has a 600rms mono block two kicker 75.2 for highs and two one farad caps just for looks (yea i know caps are crap)
there is 0 ga from the battery to a distro block then 8 ga to the kickers
for the sub amp i have 4 ga out of the distro block to the first cap then to the second to the amp. 8 ga grounds for the kickers less then 3 feet long and 4 ga grounds for the sub amp and the caps. and everything is grounded to a different spot.
normaly since the install about 6 months the voltage drop while the engine is at or over 2000rpm starts off at 14.6 and went down to 13.1
tonight we drove out to see SAW 5 ( great by the way) and it is cold and rainy so we had the heated seats on and the defroster on the front and the rear.
because of the extra draw from the defrosters and the heated seats the voltage drop went down to 11.2 .
i have done the big three when the system first went in.
her battery is factory and same with alt.
the car is just over a year old with 50,000km
i know that getting a HO alt will fix the issue but that is out of the question untill her factory warranty expires.
so i am thinking about a second battery.
will it help? money is a bit tight now so a specialized car audio battery is also out of the question for a bit..
we have a just about brand new battery out of her old car that went to the scrap yard.
the battery is just a motomaster canadian tire battery not a deep cycle or anything. i would be putting the second battery in the trunk close to the sub amp.

well I'm skrewed then LOL...
hmm hyunai elentra, 2nd bat I think would be good idea, because honestly if my neon has an 85amp alt, your must be no bigger... I have never had that much voltage drop,,,, however I dont have the heated seats.
I would think that the seats will get used alot more now, getting colder out, so I would personally try a 2nd bat, and see if it helps!

Sounds like the factory alt is defective. Have it replaced under warranty. A 600 watt amp should not have that much negative impact.
Are you sure the volt gauge in the dash is correct? They aren't all that accurate. Double check with a volt meter at the battery.

You can go to one of those part places, where they check your alt and battery for free, cause you can suspect both. Sounds like your battery may not be charging fully for two possible reasons:
1. Battery is busted
2. Alt is bad and is not charging it properly, therefore killing the battery further, or killed it already.
Whatever it is, the check is free. Worth a shot.
