Hey everyone, im new to this forum. I have purchesed a 15" kicker L7. and my question is, will my battery+alternater be enough to run this monster when i install the amp, i am told to use 1 gage wire, is that really neccessary? im planning on buying a highphonics amp overpowering the sub at 1200rms. Please all advise and tips for my installation would really be appreciated. THANKS

 

What vehicle do you have and what size alt? and yes 1/0ga wire is your best bet you dont want to starve your amp

 

its a 1991 honda accord, its a stock alternator... i know nothing about alternaters... like is it 1 alternator works for every honda? or is there specific aftermarket ones for 1991 honda accords? thanks for your reply

 

well 1st thing you wanna do is the big 3 and use 1/0 for it and the installation and u should be ok im not a honda expert there may be some other ppl who know more than me but you should be good for now

 

your alt is likely an 80amp.
any particular reason why you want to feed that thing so much power?
it's actually unnecessary and you could save some money in the process.
realistically, you can feed it about 750 rms and it would be fine

 

0/1 gauge wire is also unnecessary.

1200w/14v = 86 Amps

4 AWG will do you fine till 125 amps, so save the money and use 4awg.

that kicker will want a full 1000 wrms, so 1200 to give it a little bit of headroom is just about perfect.

That amp will draw 80 amp when fully loaded, but you won't play that loud under normal conditions, just when you're showing off!! Biggest wire you can afford is the way to go. A 2 to 4 F cap would band-aid the dimming lights. I'd upgrade the alt if it were me. Hifonics BXi 1206D says it has 2 gauge power terminals. 1200 wrms @ 1 ohm, so I assume your kicker is 15L7.2 which is 2 ohm dvc?

 

i got a 1.2 cap lol... and yea its the new l7 2 coil at 2 ohms... **** im gunna be spending way more money on this then inteneded haha.. everybody seems to have a differant answer ofr me though.. what is the cheapest thing i can do to hook up a 1200.1 kicker amp or that highphonics one (undecided which one to buy) without my car just dying when im playing my music.

A) get a bigger cap
B) get a differant alternator? (is there a specific one i should buy for a 1991 accord?)
c) another battery installed in the trunk
D) none of the above?

ignore everything else and you will be perfectly fine for quite awhile, some say it might be overkill, but we all know that no one sticks to their first stereo set ups, so if you intend on going bigger down the road you wont need to worry about anything but maybe upgrading the altenator and adding a second battery
