Installing rear 6x9" speakers in 2000 Oldsmobile Alero Coupe

I thought I'd share my experiences doing this as the information on the web appears to pertain to different model years or the four-door model and could result in damage to the car.

First off, those grilles on the parcel shelf are part of the shelf itself so prying them with a screwdriver to access the speakers will trash your car. Do the following. Its not hard and no damage will occur.

- Remove rear seat backs by tipping them down and using thumb release the catches between the seats.
- Remove cloth covered plastic pieces on each side that wouldn't otherwise be removeable with the seats installed. These may be gently pried with your fingers. Not tools required in my case.
- Remove coat hangers using a slotted screwdriver. When you pull the pin out, the collective hanger can be easily removed.
- Remove seat belt bolt. You'll need a larger torx style driver for this. Standard in a good socket set. Remove belts through gap in cover.
- Remove this collective piece of plastic from car by gently prying. You'll need to pop the lower plastic piece that goes to the floor, but you won't have to remove it.
- Remove black plastic cover on the shelf. There are four fasteners.
- Pull the shelf itself up and out.
- Now you can pop the two fasteners on each speaker and remove them tilt up and pull towards you.
- Uplug the wiring clip.

I found that I could re-use the factory speaker sockets/clips from the speakers on my aftermarket 6x9 by soldering them on. Check polarity as mine were reversed. No biggy, just flip the socket upside down and solder on.

Reverse procedure to reinstall.

FWIW, I found a water leak in one of my side windows which I sealed up before re-assembling.
