Instrument panel illumination shorting out after Stereo Install

Hi everyone,
I have installed a Sony CDX-GT4200 in my 2005 Ford F150. The problem I am having is that when the stereo is connected it works great but it blows out the Instrument panel illumination fuse. I think that I have it grounded well (probably double check tomorrow) but can't think of anything else. Here is something to note though, I had to buy a wire harness for a 2004 F150 because thats all they had and there isn't much of an option going to another store where I live. I went to Crutchfield.com and the wire harness they had for the 2005 included two harnesses. A big rectangle one (it seems to do everything) and a smaller square one (which I can't figure what it does. I just figured it was for options on the stock radio that I didn't have). I have all the wires connected on the wire adapter that came with the Sony except for the antenna and the amp wire.

Thanks for any help.

Chances are you hooked up the factory illumination wire wrong when wiring up the deck. The factory illumination wire dims the factory headunit when your headlights come on. Some aftermarket decks have this function, some cheaper ones dont. I would pull the headunit and make sure the illumination wire is either hooked up properly or disconnect it all together.

The wire adapter that comes with the Sony doesn't have a dimmer wire I am almost positive (I will confirm tonight after work) so even though there is a dimmer wire on the 2005 f150 wire harness there is no wire to solder it to.

He is trying to tell you that you probably grounded the radio to the FACTORY dimmer or illumination wire...why not take it to a professinal?

There are two reasons I don't take it to a professional:

1: I like doing things for myself and hopefully learn something in the meantime. I can still drive the truck so it is only a minor problem

2: this is most important reason. I live in Yellowknife and there is not one single business that does car stereo installations. Not one.

I will go with door # 2 Bob....

Did you check with a meter when you did the install? Did you use a interface harness or cut the wiring molex off? The illumination wire shows as ground with the parklights off and goes to +12v when the switch is engaged. Remove the ground wire from the cd player and replace the fuse in the panel. Retest the parklights to see if you have illumination again. Find a new and proper ground wire.

Ok, the wire adapter that came with the Sony and plugs into the back of the sony has three wires left unsoldered: ANT REM (not needed), AMP REM (not needed) and ground with a big metal O ring that a screw goes threw.

The wire Harness that I bought from Canadian Tire that prevents me from making any cuts to the wires on the car has 8 wires left unsoldered. 4 solid brown wires all reading MUTE on it, one black wire reading Chassis ground, one solid orange reading DIMMER GROUND, 1 orange and white wire reading DIMMER and 1 Pink wire reading what I think is TEL MUTE.

I have tried hooking the SOny ground to teh Chassis ground and still no go. I hope this helps.

Thanks!

Ron's audiotronic does do car stereos anymore. As for Crazy Eddies, I never even thought of them as I was told to never go there. Although I may have to.

Umm, what do you mean by tape off exactly? I had all the insoldered wires wrapped in black electrical tape.

Thanks.
