isobarik
Even though I don't feel iso setups were that popular 10 years ago, I think they are even less so today. The major reason I think is that there are more drivers designed to work in smaller enclosures.
A major con of an iso setup is the cost factor. You will need twice as many drivers and amplifiers to run an iso setup.

There are two popular ways of doing it, clamshell where the woofers face each other and the other way (lol I forget the term; been so long) where they are mounted one behind the other and connected with a tube or similar. Pros are small box size and deep bass extension. Cons are lower sensitivity and higher cost for having to use two woofers that essentially has the output of just one. It was more popular back in the old days when subs wanted big boxes but now with current woofer technology, isobarik is basically antiquated.

Here is a great little write-up on it: http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/isobarik/

some of the best boxes i have ever heard were compound(the term sux was looking for) iso. lowered sensitivity is a drawback and more complicated to build but the major benefit is having 2 motor structures working together, 2 magnets, spiders, surrounds etc. iso gives you very good linearity at low feqencies. you can get very deep bass with half the power that you would need to get similar output with a high excursion/high power, lower sensitvity thats available today. the woofers today tend to lack the attack of older woofers. i still do iso on a regular basis, just did one yesterday for my tennat downstairs with 2 phoenix gold qx158, 100 dollar woofers! and it sounded amazing, deep bass with tons of attack with a box half the size that one woofer would typically use. i think i really like iso

used to put the old mtx blue thunder 2nd gen(ones with the printing on the d-cap not the writing) in iso all the time, still some of the best bass ive ever heard, was a sad day they changed to the black coned blue thunders, not even close to the same woofer, imo

yea... the only real reason to go isobaric is if your driver won't get to full exursion without exceeding thermal limits in a given size box.....
