I have an old rockford p4004 that has blown both of my old Kaption audio sub-woofers. I am looking for a sub that will match this amp. I know this is a 4 channel but it is all I have. I have attached a picture of my wiring set up. Is this wired the right way for subs?

I would recomend something around 300 rms , the skar audio vvx would be a good match for this sub , and woudnt break the bank

 

I can get a 10 inch Alpine type R 350 watt 4 ohm sub for 80 with an enclosure. Would that be a good fit?

 

if thats your budget then by all means

 

i'd suggest you find out why your last subs blew befor spending money on new ones.... it seems only one side of that amp is being used. (underpowering a sub will kill it)

 

Say what? Does driving your car at 30kmh kill the engine? Underpowering a subwoofer is not going to kill it. Your subs may have just had their day in the sun. Any number of things can destroy a subwoofer (save for underpowering, a rabid attack termite would be more likely). Your amp from memory was rated at 50w rms x 4 or 200w rms x 2 into 4 ohms. Your picture shows one sub only hooked up and it is hooked up correctly. Throw rms out the window, it will not tell you how the sub will sound or how loud it is going to play. It is a guideline to look at to match the sub to the amp. A 1000 watt sub is not going to play louder than the same size, brand, series of sub rated at 300 watts. Find a sub rated to say 300 to 500w rms at 4 ohm in the price range you can afford, ensure that it will work in the box that you have and away you go.

 

wouldn't clipping amp potentially overheat the VC? if it gets bad enough its like pushing a square wave through it and without VC moving continuously the VC in the sub can strain, and over long period of time, blow...

and I cannot help but point out the flaw in analogy you used... under powering a speaker is like putting a punto engine in a 18 wheeler... yes you will be able to driver only 30km/h, would you kill the engine? definitely yes.... pro tip: as much fun as analogies seem to be, usually they are misleading and pretty much meaningless since every problem is quite unique... so try not to use them too much

and I would advice against getting a 300-500W driver for a 200W amp... you always want to have headroom in your amp... so it doesn't clip for one... and sounds better (and so you know when you are pushing it too much- if you get 500W driver for 200W amp you can be clipping it all day and not even realize it, plus the thing will barely move)... if he has 200W to play with he should get around 150-200w driver and use it appropriately... off course that will depend on the brand as some components are under/over rated

moreover I would advice 2 subs (150-200w each), unbalanced load just makes me cringe

 

Who ever started this whole myth of underpowering a sub can lead to failure should be kicked in the nuts. Clipping causes failure of a subwoofer and it happens regardless of RMS.
