I have a 300HC with many chips and scratches on the paint. Would I be affecting the heat sink if I got some spray paint and just painted overtop of the current paint? And is it necessary for me to sand it down and primer then paint or just paint overtop the current paint?

i would sandblast the cover... dont just put paint overtop, otherwise you will see the scratches and chips right through the new paint.

if it's powder coated, use a rag and some acetone, it'll peel the powder coat right off, then you can clean it, and sand it down and paint it, it'll look sweet.

some sand paper, a scotch brite and some high temp engine spray paint can work wonders, I have done it many times myself.

Lucky for you a 300HC doesn't ever get warm (well the one I had never felt even warm).
