Removin Centre Console from 1988 Jetta

How does one remove the Centre Console in a 1988 VW Jetta. I have taken out every bolt and screw that could possibly hold it on, and it does not comer out. Also, how does the shifter **** come off?

the shifter either twists off
as in being threaded on
or has a set screw or clip holding it on
the screw or clips are usually on the front and sometimes under the boot
