I recently bought a kenwood 9105d which does 500 watts rms at 4 ohms and 900 watts rms at 2 ohms, and had one 10 inch 4 ohm kenwood sub hooked up to it, it blew super fast, so I got it replaced thinking it was just a faulty sub, turns out they cannot handle power cause I blew the second one. Now I'm not sure what to get, I'm thinking 1 12 type r cause it won't take up to much room cause I utilize my trunk space, and it can handle power, but for an extra $50 bucks I could get a 15 inch type r. My only questions is if I need a huge box for the 15 or if a 1.5 cubic foot sealed box will do, and then I could always put poly fill in it to trick the sub thinking its a larger box. :/

Who installed and tuned this stuff for u? Where were the gains and filters set on yer amp? Most subs can handle more power than rated and if the amps tuned properly u have no worries. You can blow a 1000w sub just as easy as a 200 watt sub if u run your amp into distortion. Bigger box generally means more performance but the type Rs do work very well in smallish boxes.

Thanks for the reply man, umm I did most of the install myself and my friend helped me a bit :/ so that is probably the main problem, there should be no issues with the wires that I ran cause thats simple, the amp I had set at full gain I believe and had the bass boost set at zero, other than that I'm not to sure about the low pass filters n stuff :/ I'm not too what all should be changed to be tuned good. And for the r 15, what will a difference in size mean, would it just make the sub louder, or able to hit lower notes?

Gains should almost never be set to full. They are meant to tell the amp what level of signal (voltage) is coming in through the RCAs. What kind of deck are u running? What is the advertised preout voltage? Low pass should be around 100hz. I almost never use bass boost when tuning an amp.

In a good box a 15" will go deeper and still hit hard. It should be a lot louder as well. Spl comes from air movement and a 15" cone will move a lot more air than a 10. Even a 12 has almost double the surface area of a 10.

Get a dual 4 ohm typeR 15 and it will pound on 900 watts. In the right box. Most shops would prob charge u around $30 to do a basic go over of your install and tune your amp for u. Some won't wanna touch it.

Oh. Make Sure u have your fuse 18" or less from your battery just in case. Good luck.

Thanks man, I got my fuse definitely within 18" cause I read about that like everywhere :P thanks for the info on the type r 15, thats what I figure will be my best bet and will sound the best and I will definitely see about getting it set up at a shop cause I for sure won't want to blow this sub. Oh and my deck is an older alpine CDM-7861, it came with my car, I will definitely be upgrading it once I get some more cash, it says it does 50 watts x 4, but thats probably max :/

Did your last subs smell really bad like burning electronics when you took them out of the box? Did u ever hear it bottoming out? It's like a knock from the sub when u hit a note.
It would be 50w max on that deck, buts that's standard these days. I was interested in the voltage coming out the RCAs. Def get it professionally tuned.

Not sure about the bottoming out but they did smell terrible, I had it in a ported box and it was smoking out of the port, not sure about the RCA's so okay I will definitely get a shop to look at it once I get it all in.

That's what we call a burnt voice coil. A lot of company's won't warranty that because it's
Misuse/abuse installer error. You're gains are up so high you're clipping the output power. (DC electrical current vs. the AC current that all speakers run on)

Oh wow okay, so I shouldn't have the gain up all the way then? and definitely just keep bass boost off then to right?
