Sunfire stock steeringwheel controls and replacement deck?

My sisters stock factory radio has died in her car, its a 99 Sunfire with a CD/AM/FM deck with the steering wheel controls.... I am curious I haveta replace the deck and she deosnt want to loose the steering wheel controls so is there anyway to replace the deck and still keep the controls without replacing factory deck with another factory deck? The previous owner of the car wired external amps somehow into the stock speakers and its all screwed up so i wasnt to take everything out and do the system right if possible.... Wire the aps and speakers right and have the ability to use RCA outputs from a real deck to run the amps and not use the way the rookie has this setup currently.....

Thanks!

Hope this makes sense

sounds like a line level adapter was used for the external amp. from my experience mating factory and aftermarket was never a match made in heaven.

unless one of the x-perts here can help, chances are the steering wheel controls are redundant.

my friend has a mercedes with the controls on the wheel. his goal was to keep the stock look, but he had constant noise problems from his amps. he even used a line level adapter from the great david navone and still no joy.

says he`s looking into an aftermarket deck now................

I just bought a steering control adaptor made by PAC. 44.60 U.S. Its not here yet so i can't tell you how well it works. They make them for specific decks and specific cars. I didn't want the generic IR type.
If you're replacing the whole system, you won't have line level adaptor problems and i think 99 was was before the GM LAN except fot caddy and corvette.

Well 99 is a good year pre the Class 2 data interface. So a basic wiring harness, mounting kit, and antenna adapter and Axxess makes the Steering wheel interface for domestic vehicles SWC-01.

Your sunfire needs the following In Metra Numbers:

Mounting
99-4000 Premium
99-4544 Budget
99-3320 Custom (Vehicle specific)

Wiring Harness
70-1858

Antenna Adapter
40-GM10

Steer Wheel Interface
Axxess SWC-01

Eclipse also has good success with steering wheel interfaces. Any of the cd players + the SWI-ECL = the way to go.
