I am riding in a 1990 4runner.

I just bought some 10" JL's and a MTX amp... and I think Im hooked. This is my first stereo, and Im reading like mad trying to learn how it all works. Im also planning on how to save my money for a big install down the road.

In an SUV with quite a bit of room behind the rear seats, what is the best direction to face the subs in? Is there a best?

Also... so I dont have to make another thread...

would having say 2 x 8" subs and 2 x 15" subs sound good in the same vehicle? Im not sure how I would go about enclosing or powering them, but just a thought. Thenh maybe cross them over to hit certain frequencies... covering more tones of bass.

Would this work? Would it be worth it? Am I retarded for even thinking this?

Hey man, it is not usually a good idea to mix and match sub sizes in the same vehicle from what I understand, as you may run into some cancellation issues. Best to keep it multiple sets of the same size/type of sub. As far as direction, I think some guys with SUV's here (Father Yuli??) fire the subs up. If you want more from those subs, do up a ported box. They will be louder than the sealed box they are in now. 2.5-3 cubes ported should do the trick..... hope this helps a bit.

I disagree.

If you're using the 8s a woofers/midwoofers and the 15s as subs that's fine. You select your crossover points so the 8s and 15s aren't overlapping. Just don't install the 8s near the 15s. Get the 8s nice and close to the front of the truck, they could act as a great way to round out the front stage, and blend the front stage with the subs.

I would like to do that some day;
Have a pair of 8s low passed around 150hz with a sub-sonic filter @ 40hz, then have a pair of 12s or 15s low passed @ 40hz in a box tuned to 25ish hz and a tonne of power.

For sure, I was referring to a pair of 8's and a pair of 15's in the back of the truck together. In my Jeep I ran an 8" RE in the console, and 10's in the back, it worked great......

as to firing your subs : I had mine all firing at the back , some people have ths subs up and ports back , as for building the box go with the specs they gave u and port it and u will be happy

 

For a sealed box, fire them to the rear (to increase the path length) & for a ported box, aim the port towards the front.
