Hello,

The wire will heat up, because the amp is trying to draw more current than the wire produce send down it. It's like driving a car with 1/8 inch fuel lines up hill. Just like in muscle cars, a bigger carburator more power, just like power wire...

I have been told that the wire could melt or catch fire as well! Not something you want to have happen!

The bigger the power wire that you have, the less electrical problems you should encounter. However. Unless you have upgraded all the electrical wires under your hood, ie: Alternator power to battery, battery ground, etc... It won't make much of a difference what you are running to your amps and such. Now obviously no matter what, you need to run big enough wire to your amps ect... to prevent a melted wire and other problems. However light dimming will not go away if you are running four or two gauge wire to your amp and you still have 8 or 12 gauge alternator to battery wire or ground wires under the hood. Your electrical system will only be as good as your weakest link. So if you put 4 or 2 gauge power wire to your amp and expect light dimming to be at a minimum it will still be a problem if the major wires under your hood are still dinky. I was running 4 gauge power wire to my amp and had a small light dimming problem, and I hadn't upgraded any wires under my hood. They were all like 8-12 gauge wires. As soon as I put all 4 gauge under my hood. The light dimming was much less noticeable! So whatever size wire you plan to use for your amps ect... plan on putting that size wire under your hood for alternator to battery and ground wires!
